I was very interested in what this did on a trombone or for a trombonist. From the description it seemed like a force multiplier. Less air through the mouthpiece for equivalent sounds and volumes. Sign me up for that. As I have learned more about this device, it appears to be kind of that first idea I had but more specifically a practice tool for proper mouth piece techniques.
A very interesting idea nonetheless. Unfortunately, I was not able to properly test it out to see what it is all about. I didn’t notice any real change in tone or volume while using it. I adjust the Optimizer all the way out and all the way in. Nothing really happened.
So I decided to take it apart and I believe I found the issue with mine. There are two ring magnets on the inside that probably have something to do with how the air flows. My magnet rings were broken and can’t be repaired in any way that will make it work. It is a neat looking device disassembled. Looks like something from a spy movie or for a spray paint gun. It is a pretty neat device but still broken. So I will just rate it in the middle. Maybe it’s great, maybe it isn’t. 3 Stars.

My daughter plays Trombone and is trying to break the habit of pressing in too hard. She was able to easily instal it on her instrument and learn how she needs to correct her technique. Im not sure how I feel about the cost but if it is able to correct her technique long term and save us extra tutoring than this will be a good value for the money. It feels like it is well made and should last for years. It doens’t seem to interfere with sound quality which is a huge bonus.

This is a must have for Brass musicians. It definitely got me to stop using so much pressure and is a great practice tool for everyone to have. Always looking for things to improve my musicality and this item does it for me!

What may be helpful to know about this brass player’s optimizer:
* As a brass instrument player, I understand the need to be careful to not press my embouchure to hard into the mouthpiece. Light pressing leaves more room for responsive playing and good intonation.
* This gadget is meant to train me, as a player, to keep that lip pressure at a minimum.
* The idea is that by attaching my mouthpiece to this device, any excessive pressure will cause the air blown into the horn to deflect out. In essence, no sound comes out.
* Here’s where the problem comes in: ANY pressure when I began playing (just placing the mouthpiece in position) caused the optimizer to shut off the airflow. I COULD NOT play a single note with this apparatus in place.
* Sorry to be such a negative voice, because I think the idea is a good one. Just please find a way to correct the sensitivity of the optimizer.

1. I love the idea. Pressure is a serious problem for a lot of musicians and this is meant to help correct that issue.
2. I play on a very large Bass Trombone and when I add the device is very awkward to hold let alone play. I think tweaking this to be something you can practice buzzing on instead of attaching to your horn would be a good idea.
3. As a previous review stated, any little pressure makes it near impossible to play, and yes, I had it fully adjusted to all resistance levels.
