This is a truly excellent instruction manual for learning the classical guitar. It is actually a composite of three books. The explanations are clear and easy to comprehend. The text and musical scores are clear to read and printed on good quality paper. Furthermore the book has spiral binding and sits open flat on the musical stand. The lessons progress logically and not too fast for a beginner. The content is accurate, interesting and helpful. The exercises are musical, interesting and in many cases charming. Most of the practice exercises are taken from well known folk songs or the classical repertoire – the material is never boring. This book is fun to use and learn from. The beginner will learn how to read music as well as gain a good understanding of rhythm and timing, chord construction, playing in different keys and much more. Books two and three teach how to play in the higher positions and a wealth of classical repertoire is included. The book comes with two CDs so that the student can play duets. I love this book and will be using it for many years. I highly recommend this book.

Duncan’s method, in my opinion, is the best out of the many books I have examined, and/or purchased. The quality of the CD’s is more than acceptable; I was not looking for concert audio quality, they do the job.

I am quite pleased with my progress, his instructions are easy to understand, and follow.

So far I have only made it through book 1, and so far this book is incredible! Very quick progression, especially if you can already read sheet music (no tabs in this book). The CDs include accompaniment tracks (like the teacher part), to play along with. Makes solo learning much more enjoyable and less lonely. So far the book 1 cd is accurate. There are a few songs where the player misses a few quarter rests… I’ll update if the rest of the CDs are wildly off. Very enjoyable, highly recommended.

This is perhaps the definitive introductory guide if you wish to begin to learn classical guitar. The instruction is clear, concise, and well structured. It takes you from the very, very beginning of playing the classical guitar and brings you to a pretty advanced place all things considered by the end.

I knocked 2 stars off because the included CDs are really disappointing as they only cover a tiny fraction of what is in the written instruction and are skewed towards basic exercises, not the actual composed pieces of music that comprise the majority of this book.

Still an excellent book, just wish I would have ordered it without the CDs.

I like the fact that all three books are now contained in one volume. I have been a classical guitar teacher for around 40 years now and I have not found a guitar method that suits most age levels and levels of commitment as this method.

Love this method! I play several wind instruments but I’ve struggled to learn Classical guitar for a couple of years. This book is the most logical and progressive method I’ve come across. It fills in many of the techniques I’ve not found in other methods and has already helped my playing after only a few weeks. I look forward to working through the other 2/3 of the book.

Well structured study book. Slowly teaches you one string at a time starting with learning open strings and then progressing onto additional notes on each string. Practice songs are good and help to practice what you have cumulatively learned up to that point which includes reading musical notes for multiple strings that you have previously learned.

Charles Duncan has compiled a very thorough and interesting method for serious beginner and intermediate level classical guitarists. I addition to the standard literature you would expect, Mr. Duncan has written numerous pieces for this book. His skill for combining jazz, latin and other genres as one progresses along, make this a delightful taste of something totally unexpected in a classical method book. If you like a challenge, but are bored with the same old thing you’ve played before, check out Duncan’s material. You won’t be disappointed.
