True Mind –
This fit directly on the 1gen Miata. No defects from the item. Only one of the spacers was too long for the screw to fit in the engine block, but I was able to manage just fine by not using the spacer. This will fit the 1gen Miata 1.6L without issues.
Amazon Customer –
1.6 NA miata, fit great for Amazon parts.

so when i pulled the cover out of the plastic sleeve i noticed the timing marks on the timing guage were all deformed and obviously wouldnt work to set timing and i was going to return product thinking its what i get for buying a cheap china aftermarket part. but then after closer inspection it looked like i could peel away this smooshed looking timing guage plastic and wouldnt ypu know it was more like some sort of rubber goop that im assuming they pour over the timing marks to protect it during shipping? maybe? idk but yeah once you remove this the marks are nice and clean and crisp no need for a return. definitely a good low cost option over the stock oem replacement that can cost 100 bucks

As I write this, the product has a rating of 5 stars. But a reality check is required because I found it is definitely not a five star product that gives a five star experience. Note that the other review describing a problem with the timing marks and lettering being covered over by a semi hard plastic film which can be peeled away by force is spot on, and I also experienced that.
The biggest issue with this part is that the two lower most bolt holes (straddling the crank puller) do not line up with the screw holes on the engine! They are spaced too close together (by probably around 3-4mm) and I had to forcefully push and pry the plastic in order to get the metal tubes (pressed into the bolt hole positions on the part) to align with the threaded holes on the engine. This might be easier with the engine out of the car, but in the car, with the front sway bar and other stuff in the way, it isn’t that easy. I probably spent a good 20 minutes using different tools and ways to pry apart the lower part of the timing cover to get the M6 screw on other side started after installing the first one. So the reality check is that it doesn’t have anywhere near the fit and finish of the original Mazda part. If you can afford the cost of an OEM part and want something that is of unquestionable quality skip this and buy OEM. If not, get this knowing that it is well below the fit and finish of OEM. With heat and time, it seems likely the plastic on mine will plastically deform and set permanently to the correct bolt hole spacing making future removal and reinstallation easy like the OEM part.

Picked this up f0r my 01 miata I’ve had since brand new, Was time to do the timing and add bigger cams, so I figured i’d try this set. Came in timely, and fit perfectly. Timing marks are literally 1 degree off. But well worth it. Fits neatly, comes with the little rubber gaskets as well. Will work on VVT Miatas from 01-05. Pretty sure it’s the same for all 1.8 miatas from 94-05 (never looked at the part numbers. Save your money and get this set. Ordered a few more since i only work on miatas, and do timing sets all the time. Fits the factory harmonic balancer, and also will fit an ATI and Fluidamper with a 36-2 trigger wheel. Whether your stock or not, this fits. Great deal over the 100-140 from mazda dealer, then you still have to order the little gasket kit…..Will buy again for sure!

This is not a direct fit for a 1995 1.8L. But with some minor trimming at the top and clearancing around the crank pulley I was able to get it to fit.
