The very first time that I took this rod out it snapped in half that is not what you would expect from a $200 rod ,very disappointed that this happened four days after the warranty or return period Expired.

This combo is cheap for a reason. The reel spool was scratched and the bail was too. The rod was fine surprisingly.

Iโ€™ve wanted a penn battle for a while now. Ive had a fierce for a few years now and I really enjoy it. Itโ€™s however a surf reel size so that is kind of a single use reel. When I saw this I wanted something that could pull double duty.

I have a daiwa in a 3000 and my fierce is a 8000. I wanted something that would fit somewhere in the middle that wouldnโ€™t be under powered against jacks, blues, sharks, Bonita, etc but wouldnโ€™t feel like absolute overkill on smaller fish like reds and specks here in central Florida.

I ended up with the 6000 paired with the 7ft rod. I under stand the 6000 is kind of a black sheep in the lineup but I find it perfect as an all rounder. Even while kayak fishing Iโ€™m not worried about being under powered on most hookups and the 7 ft rod is plenty long for my purposes.

The reel is big. Itโ€™s for all intents and purposes a 5000 but with a bigger spool. I run .4 mm braid on it and it spooled up nicely and casts very well. The previous issues with windknots and the battle must have been worked out. As I havenโ€™t had an issue yet but it may be too early to tell.

I did end up having to swap the reel to a different rod because the rod cane damaged and missing a guide, not sure what happened there. But amazon took care of me so I canโ€™t complain too much. Just couldnโ€™t use the rod. But for the price I paid and amazon swiftly helping I can say Iโ€™m not dissatisfied. I had an extra gx2 that I put it on so it worked out and Iโ€™ll get another battle rod if I can find one thatโ€™s not part of a bundle.

To sum it up I find the 6000 great. It fills a gap between surf reel and light tackle, (yes I consider a 3000 light tackle) I works bigger lures very well and it does very well for chunking our bigger baits as well. I got mine used (like new) and the price put it inline with some Shakespeare setups. But even at full price around 100-120 itโ€™s a worthwhile setup if youโ€™re in my situation. If youโ€™re looking for a starter setup to fish the inlets and maybe some light surf and rivers Iโ€™d say get a 3-4K with a 7-8 ft rod. Youโ€™ll have more fun because even smaller fish feel bigger and who doesnโ€™t like that?
    Tight lines everyone.

I bought this for a trip to the Outer Banks, but to be honest I’ve been nervous because of all the reviews about the rod snapping. I used it for surf casting nearly every day, sometimes twice a day while in NC and it performed great. I caught roughly 40 fish and the rod was fine. I really love the reel, though a 6000 was overkill for what I was fishing for. The reel was smooth, with no quirks. There was plenty of drag and bail action was great. I didn’t catch anything that would overly challenge the rod, but for surf casting and catching Mullet, Spot and Mackerel it was perfect.

Also, the price I paid for the combo was roughly the price of the reel by itself, so i’m not that worried if I have to replace the rod at some point.

UPDATE: I bought a smaller 300 combo for freshwater and so far so good. The reel is fantastic and no major problems with the rod. That set was more expensive, but it wasn’t much more than the reel itself, so again, if the rod breaks down the line, replacing it isn’t the end of the world.

UPDATE 2: Caught a bunch of good-sized blue gills and a largemouth that weighed a few lbs today. No issue at all with the freshwater rod. Reel was smooth on the retrieve using crankbaits.

UPDATE 3: Iโ€™m up to close to 100 fish on the 6000 and so far no issues with the rod. I caught several good sized sand sharks in Cape May and a large Skate at Sandy Hook and brought both in with no trouble. I still wouldnโ€™t say Iโ€™ve overly challenged the rod but it is definitely holding up to constant use.

I’ve been using this fishing rod and reel combo for years now, and it’s still going strong! The full metal body and heavy-duty components have held up incredibly well against big saltwater gamefish. The HT-100 carbon fiber drag system is both smooth and powerful, allowing for effective handling without sacrificing performance.

Ordered the combo cause it wasn’t much more then just buying the reel which is what I really wanted. It was a good deal so I took it. The rod arrived with a broken tip. I did a return and they sent me a new combo this time tip was fine. The rod doesn’t break down which kinda sucks but oh well

This is a mixed bag for me. While I absolutely LOVE the reel, the rod snapped the first time I hooked a bigger fish. When buying an 8000 series rod & reel it needs to hold up against pretty much anything. This rod broke while I was reeling in a 2 foot sand shark. I’ve caught larger fish on my 4000 series Ugly Stick with no issue. In contrast to the rod being a huge letdown, the reel is AMAZING. Buttery smooth, tough as nails, reliable drag control, and comfortable thru the long fight. Buy this reel, think twice about the rod.

A very reasonable heavy duty set of combo good for salt n fresh water set up. I give 4 star due to the handling of amazon! It should be bubble wrap and box properly.

I went with the 2000 because I am in Michigan and wanted it for inland lakes . Put some 10lb braided spyder wire on it . Took it out and it casted great . I like the rod so far though I prefer two piece . 6.6 is almost to long for what I do but if I have to I can do some pier fishing with this in the Great Lakes . I think for Salt Water , reds , blues , snook , flounder one would be best with a 4000 and up with at least 20 pound test even 30 and a wire leader . For what I will do often running across crappie , bluegill and small perch with a occasional pike or bass this will be fun . Maybe I should of opted for the 2500 or even 3000 so I could use it down south . I agree wtih the one reviewer it would be nice for sheephead who are famouns for sneaking a oyster off a hook . I sure wouldnt want to tie into a 45 pound jack with this rig . Overall very pleased and like the rod . Cork does stain but it gives a great grip and I prefer it to a slimy feel on modern rod ends when wet . Good luck with the lifteime warranty for the price of shipping you cant do wrong with Penn Reels . It is nice to own something of quality too .
