I purchased this as a demonstration of aquaponics for my homeschoolers. We have the 1.4 gallon aquarium. In the aquarium we have one handsome beta (his name is Bon Jovi), about 2 inches of gravel, 4 marimo moss balls, and a betta hammock. Planted in the aquarium is a Peace Lily plant. We have had this setup for a little bit now and have nothing but positive things to say. The aquarium stays very clean with weekly water changes of about 25%. Nothing is added to it-no chemicals, supplements, medications, etc. Just clean water from the tap. Our Bon Jovi has plenty of space and is very active and healthy. My kiddos often comment that they believe he is smiling. The Peace Lily is doing well also. We are seeing new tap roots and new leaves slowly emerging. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this!
JUNE 25, 2019 UPDATE:
We have now had this tank for 18 months. I’m happy to report that we also have the original beta. Bon Jovi is happy and healthy and doing quite well. We did add a small heater last winter. We live in Michigan and it gets pretty dang chilly here! We continue to maintain the tank with simple, weekly water changes with nothing else added (water conditioners, chemicals, medications, etc.) The white gravel started looking pretty dirty and dingy, so I changed that to river rocks a few months ago. The Peace Lily has grown so much that it’s been divided twice and the new plants are elsewhere in our home. The roots on the portion of the plant that remains in the aquarium need to be trimmed regularly to make sure Bon Jovi doesn’t get tangled up in them. Still love this aquarium and still highly recommend!

Beautiful aquarium. My betta has been living in it for 4 months already. I do a 100% water change every week/2 week. Be careful to keep the tank in a warm room away from windows. There is not way the water is gonna be hot enough near a window. Bettas are tropical fish that require water of at least 70-75
Feed the fish as the betta won’t eat the plant roots. The roots of the house plant grew so much. Be careful to remove all the dirt from the houseplant before plating it. i did not do it and i end up with dirt at the bottom of the tank

My female beta is doing well in it.
I fit an aerator through the side openings , where I also feed the fish.- I don’t lift the plant container to feed as recommended – I feed through the side opening. Used glass pebbles instead off the rocks provided. If my fish is happy- I’m happy. Plant is a plus.

This is much larger than the fancy glass bowl I had before and it allows you to see the fish moving around instead of just staying in one place. The fact it holds over a gallon makes water changes less frequent and keeps it clear longer. Also the plant holder gives more options than other tanks. Only downside is that it’s plastic instead of glass and will probably scratch and discolor over time, but for the price I’d just buy another one if and when that happens.

The plastic is clear so the visibility of my fish and plants are easy to see.
It’s very stable on my counter top.
Easy to maintain because the top opening is large enough for a container to scoop out the water for weekly cleaning.

This tank is everything I wanted it to be. Perfect size for a work desk tank. I’m also a plant fanatic and love putting my plants in water so this tank sealed the deal for me. I frequently trim the roots as they tend to cause the tank to get dirty when I let them get too long. My little sparky loves his home and is going strong on 1 year in this tank. I just recently got the air bubbles for him. It’s easy to clean and is a great statement piece. My coworkers all come visit him and admire the tank everyday.

This kit is wonderful. I have the larger tank. It needs a plant and some fish, along with a weekly water change and some fish food. As a pet-keeping set-up it is delightfully simple.
I do have a warning however: the plant must have its roots in the tank water, and preparing the plant for that job is fiddley because there is a narrow grid to pull the roots through. It is also easy while you are changing the water to lift the plant roots out of the grid by mistake and damage its roots.
I think the plant holder needs re-designing. There should be a way to fix the plant in place.

I bought 4 of these for my room. Couldn’t decide which fish I wanted so I got all of them. The tank is a nice little size, perfect for a single betta. I put a mini heater and I’ll be getting a mini aerator to complete it. Fish seems happy, and my cat keeps him company.
Pros: Great size for desk. Easy to put together. Easy to maintain. Sturdy. Could easily be used to grow small fruit/veg hydroponically.
Of the 4 I bought, one came with defects on the base (seems to have been an imperfect mold pour) I saw in other reviews this may be a common problem. The material isn’t as clear as some of the other acrylics, but for the price point still a good value. Also not enough clay stones for the top. I do hydroponics, so thankfully I had extra.

Really great option for aquaponics with a betta fish. With my setup, I decided to propogate Thai basil, which is a cool way to grow a plant if you don’t want to buy one raised in a pot.
The actual tank is quite aesthetically pleasing as compared with other options out there and just fits a fish of this size. Don’t go for the smaller option, it’s simply too tiny!
I also wouldn’t keep anything other than a betta in these conditions too because they’re one of the only types with a labyrinth organ.
The plant needed a bit of light so I added a moss covered coconut shell for my fish to hide in. (And before I get any critiques, I live in the tropics so my setup does not require a heater!)
Only thing I’d note is it was affordable when I bought it but the price seems to have increased a lot since.

I’m pretty pleased with this little fish bowl. I havent chosen a plant for it just yet but it feels very well designed. I’m a little concerned how thin the plastic is, I would have liked it to be a little thicker but I have a crystal clear view of my female beta and there are no cracks in the tank but I’m afraid it might crack in the process of cleaning it. I paid $25 bucks for it so hopefully it will last a reasonable amount of time. I would have loved it to be real Glass and would have been happy to pay for the quality however I’m not finding any options like that at the moment.
I used LED Christmas lights below and a small one lbs bag of rose crystal stones and I couldn’t be happier how the lighting has turned out. If I come a cross a plant I’d like to put in I’ll remove the one in the bowl; but for now I think she enjoys swimming around it. I’ll probably sit the plant and basket in a vase for awhile before adding it to the tank to be sure any chemical fertilizers or pesticides have leached and I see an esthetically pleasing root system for my beta to enjoy. With the flexibility of how the lid is designed I imagine all types of bog plants from bamboo to peace lily to pathos would do well.

This tank was not made to add any filters, heaters, etc. to the tank. The lid cannot go on securely if there are any wires coming out, plus finding a small filter that doesn’t hit the center recess (where the rocks/plants go) is a challenge. Overall the concept is good, but there are flaws in the execution. Also, it really can only hold one fish, due to the size- 1.5 gallons.
