I left it hanging on my wire veg enclosure–I have to get someone to hang it from a branch. No goldfinches yet–maybe I should buy their special seeds? Features seem as advertised–some of the other reviews are apropos, read them.
7/5: sitting having morning coffee–several birdies were pretty active around the feeder. These were tiny with upright feathers on the head. Pics on the internet showed pretty well-formed tufts of hair styles on the head–my birds had like just a few upright spikes. Then after a while, a couple more came, and these looked like finch from the internet pics. (Yea, I’m very educated about birds! haha). Lo and behold, they pecked at the seeds a bit and flew off. Actually, the feeder is temporarily hung on the wire covering my veggie box, and they sat on this rather than the perches that came with the feeder. Should I leave it there??
    So cute!!
But my feed has big sunflower type seeds mixed in. ? So next time I’m going to specify food for finches.
When I have the water sprinkler on, they drink from there. When I have a bowl of water on the ledge, they don’t “bathe” in it. Wondering if I should buy a watering bowl?

7/9/24 Changed my four-stars to five. It’s official! The seeds went way down–means they’ve been eating them. So I sat with my coffee and watched the cute chirpy birds come and go to the feeder and peck at the seeds. The opening seems to work just fine, and I even say them sitting on the tiny perch.

I’m new to feeding the backyard birds. I noticed that my neighbour’s were putting out good for the larger birds, but there didn’t seem to be anything for the smaller ones. So, I did some research and bought this one with a large bag of nyjer seed.

It took about 2-3 weeks for the birds to discover the feeder and start using it on a regular basis. Once they do, it’s unnecessary to fill it past the third set of openings. It’s just a waste of seed. I usually fill it just past the bottom set of openings. In the summer, when there are other options, the birds don’t eat as much. So, you will need to dump out and waste a lot of seed every time you clean the feeder. Now, in the fall, the birds are eating more, so I fill it just past the second set of openings. It might be different in the winter.

Do not hang in a tree!!! No matter what you do, the squirrels will keep trying to get to it and cause seed to be wasted. I found the ideal place was to hang it under a large tree with high branches …. on a shepherd’s hook. A deterrent for the squirrels is a “Slinky”. I saw it on YouTube. It’s impossible for the squirrels to climb a shepherd’s hook with a slimy attached. Don’t hang near feeders for larger birds. The smaller birds are skidding and won’t even come near.

The sound of running water, attracts all birds….. especially, when the weather has been dry. I placed a large, shallow bowl on the grass on propped up my hose so it just dropped into the bowl. This was enough to attract all sizes of birds and the squirrels. The water really works.

If you feed the birds in the summer, you must continue to do so in the winter when they need food supplements even more. The small birds are even more susceptible to the winter cold as they don’t have the ability to store fat.

So far, I have had mostly chickadees and a few finches as regular visitors. But I live in northern Ontario.

Helpful Hint….. But 2 of the same. When you take one down to clean, replace it immediately with the second one ready to go. As you need to let the feeder air dry, completely, before refilling with seed, it could be a day that the feeder is not up. By that time, the birds are looking elsewhere and it may take them another few weeks to come back.

As the holes are tiny and the cap is tight, the nyjer seed stays dry, even during a storm. No need to clean and change seed too often.I

Great value for money. Don’t need anything more expensive.

For $8 you can’t go wrong with this feeded. It’s all plastic so it won’t corrode and it’s simple to fill and hang. I have noted a wide variety of small to medium sized birds feeding from it regularly.
It is plastic so don’t treat it roughly. I accidently stepped on one of mine and the clear seed tube broke.

I bought this nice looking thistle feeder to hang in a tree by my front porch because I thought it would last longer than the sock feeders I was using before.

It’s been over a week and besides never seeing even one of the neighborhood’s tiny birds on it, there’s no decline in the amount of seed. So the birds aren’t feeding when I’m not there to see.

Tough to give this a 3 when it’s well made for the price, assembles easily (you have to add the perches) and looks good. Those are all positives.

But the birds are staying away and I have no idea why.

Best feeder for the price! This is so much better than what I had. The birds flock to these, they can sit on the perches easily and there’s room for all of them without fighting each other. The seeds don’t fall out of the tube and the birds seem happy picking them out without having to stick their heads inside, which they had to do with my other one. The soft ports are pure genius. The quality isn’t super high quality but it’s sturdy enough for me. And at this price, I’ll just replace them when the time comes. The birds seem to like the two food choices, thistle in one and sunflower seeds in the other They go back and forth. Goldfinches and chickadees are especially attracted. Highly recommended!!!

This feeder is light weight, easy to assemble, easy to fill and holds a lot of seed. The birds empty it every day. My favorite thing about it, and most important feature to me, is that it really is water proof. We’ve had some heavy storms lately and the feeder was not affected at all. I also think the yellow color looks attractive. I’m very pleased with it… and so are the birds!

I ordered this on a whim, as a back up in case we lose another feeder to wildlife or weather. I can hardly believe how great this feeder is working. By the third day we have constant goldfinch and chickadee traffic. The flex ports prevent the seed from spilling so most of the seed is actually eaten and lasts a little longer than other types. Not to mention, it’s a steal!
