[Edit, June 2015] After one season of use, I’m still very happy with this feeder. I notice a lot of complaints about this model “leaking like a sieve”. I have my feeder over landscape, not a wooden deck and so I don’t see evidence of leaking, but I can look out the window and see when it’s dripping and when it’s not dripping, and I maintain mine still only leaks when it gets tipped (wind). I did have a problem with the plastic hook on the lid cracking, but Perky Pet customer service (@ birdfeeders.com) responded favorably (not within 24 hours, but they resolved the issue within a couple weeks even though it took almost a week to initially respond to my complaint).

[Edit, May 6] Good news! My first customer showed up this week and he has been coming back regularly to this feeder. The little ruby-throated hummingbird needs to stick his beak into the bee guard nearly up to his eyeballs to drink, but he doesn’t seem to mind. My visitor immediately gravitated toward the high end of my misshapen perch where he’s at a better elevation to rest while feeding (perhaps Perky Pets should consider the Amazon’s design modification to the perch). 🙂 I love how easy it is to clean, except I’m having problems popping out the flowers/bee guards. As others have mentioned, the ant moat isn’t big enough to be effective – the shallow moat dries up within a day. The feeder leaks when buffeted by the wind but I don’t think it leaks any worse than other similar-style feeders – if it tips, it’s going to leak. Keep it out of the wind if possible.I’ve already wrote scathing feedback to Amazon on their shipping of this product, so I’ll try to keep this rating to the product itself, but the perch on my feeder is permanently misshapen from being poorly packaged. You will take your chances until Amazon addresses this problem (see explanation below if the perch is a concern for you*)

This is the new & improved Perky-Pet 209B – with some design features I’ve been looking for in a hummingbird feeder. I’m thrilled to say the base is truly 2 parts so you can easily clean inside the base! Also, the mouth of the bottle is now wide enough to use a standard bottle brush. It also came with an S-hook, although it’s pretty small and didn’t fit around my shepherd’s hook. Two other new features, the bee guards and the built-in ant moat are features I haven’t seen in action yet as it’s still a pretty cold spring here. This feeder’s design still requires you to fill and assemble the feeder upside down, then quickly flip it to prevent leaks, however, unlike some of the earlier designs, it stands securely inverted on its lid so it doesn’t require one hand to hold it while being filled. The ultimate test will be if it draws in hummingbirds. I don’t think there are any around here yet, but when they get here they’ll have a clean feeder!

*The shipping problem: the feeder was shipped FULLY ASSEMBLED in a seemingly huge box. However, the box wasn’t very tall. It was only tall enough to fit the solid red base with the feeder laying on its side – you can observe from the picture that the perch is considerably wider than the base – the perch did NOT fit. Instead of removing the perch and laying it FLAT in the box (there was plenty of room!), they left the perch attached and crushed it to fit the short side of the box, leaving the perch misshapen. I’ve spent the past day trying to reshape the perch, and it is better, but not like new. I decided to wash & fill my feeder instead of returning it, because, until they fix the shipping problem, they’d just ruin another feeder and no local stores have this new feeder design yet. Honestly, if they’d detach the base assembly from the bottle, I’m guessing they could ship this feeder in a MUCH smaller box!

Top reviewers were correct, this is a better design for this type of feeder. Easily taken apart to wash, clean and fill, sturdy glass for sugar water and the plastic pieces seem well enough made to last. The little s hook it comes with is kind of small, but works. Can’t speak to longevity yet, but for the price I think this is a good buy.

Stop searching. You have now found what your are looking for. This is BY FAR the best hummingbird feeder we have ever used. It has a high-capacity, GLASS NOT PLASTIC, nectar tank. It has a built-in insect baffles. The nectar tank screws into a leak-proof base (without the use of a rubber gasket that will inevitably wear out and leak). Best of all (considering all the pluses) this superior product is very affordable compared to other similar products here on Amazon.

Here are some tips:

IT MAY NOT BE AS PRETTY AS BLOWN GLASS… BUT IT’S A HECK OF A LOT EASIER TO CLEAN!
My wife is considering changing out all our feeders for this one. Cleaning a curvy blown glass feeder can be a real pain. This one is easy peasy.

BOILING AND COOLING THE NECTAR
My wife doesn’t boil and cool her nectar mix, so she only uses 2 cups at a time. If you do not boil and cool the nectar, it will turn sour much more quickly. My wife doesn’t mind changing the nectar more often because she feels the boiling process requires more effort. THE NECTAR IN MY PHOTO AND VIDEO IS CLOUDY BECAUSE MY WIFE USES RAW SUGAR.

INCLUDED HOOK MIGHT BE TOO SMALL FOR YOUR SET UP (EXAMPLE: WROGHT IRON)
Our feeders hang on wrought iron shepherd-hook-style hooks. The wrought iron it too thick for the included hook, so we’ve been using old hooks from previous feeders. One could also simply use some wire to “jerry-rig it.”

CONSIDER NEEM OIL IF INSECTS ARE STILL A PROBLEM
Consider rubbing some pure neem oil on the affected area if you still struggle with insects. Neem oil is a natural non-toxic oil that repels all insects – often used for organic gardening. It does have an unusually pungent fragrance… which is normal.

This feeder is practical, efficient, and affordable. An enthusiastic two thumbs up!!!
