I liked just about everything about this set up. Everything came ready to fish except for a fly on the end. This was my first 4wt and first Redington product. Looks great (i love green), feels great, very pleased with it. The ID reel was very smooth and MUCH better than I expected. I only have a 20 yr old LL.Bean Streamlight outfit to compare it to, which may be why I was so impressed with the reel. The ID reel is a highly adjustable disk drag and the Streamlight reel was click drag, with basically zero adjustment. The Vice outfit was a great package deal with an affordable high performance rod and reel.

Great product. I’ve been fishing a 5wt orvis encounter and decided to break into steelheading. I bought the 8wt 9′. It is like butter, easily gets 20 yds with a basic overhead cast, gives great feed back through the entire cast and is highly accurate. This rod easily will match the comfort of higher end rods like sage or Loomis. Looks fantastic however was slightly heavier than some other 8wts I’ve tried. The id reel is silk, its drag is amazing for its price range and feels insanely durable and we’ll made. Overall this is an amazing setup for under 300 and will not disappoint. Great buy.

This is my second Redington Vice fly rod. To come with a travel case with an I.D. reel and fully loaded with fly line is a bonus! My friend has a Sage rod and when he tried my VICE, he was very surprised with the quality and the feel. I have an Orvis Clearwater, Orvis Encounter and Douglas Sky all in the 5 weight. My Vice outperforms them all! If you’re looking for a great rod to start fly fishing with and want a rod that will last you a lifetime, look no further than the Redington Vice! I love mine!

Rod has nice fast action, cast well at longer distances, shorter presentations are a little underwhelming
but manageable, cork is low mid quality. All in all it is what I expected for the price.

I own dozens of high end $1000+ rods and have been in the market for a “cheap” yet still decent rod and reel to use as a loaner when I have friends and family in my drift boat. When I saw this combo at nearly half off ($178) I had to give it a shot. I know quite a few guides that use redington vice rods for their clients. I have to say the rod is quite nice. It’s fast (tip flex)… which is great, and the fit and finish is superb. The reel was surprising good, cast aluminum with hard plastic knobs, drag is smooth and provides quite a bit of stopping power. The line is “ok”, it’s a rio mainstream which means bare bones, basic taper, no welded loops.
All in all it’s a great bit of kit. Buy this combo and then toss the line that comes with it and put on a scientific anglers amplitude or rio avid or gold and you’ll be all set.
Pros:
– high end feeling and casting
– excellent fit and finish
– balances well (poor balance will cause fatigue if you fish for a long period of time)
Cons:
– not US made (can’t expect that for the price tho!)
– plastic on reel may not stand the test of time (but for the guy who only fishes occasionally it’s perfectly fine)
– fly line is not the best (top tier fly lines cost $130 bucks however so you can’t expect that)
