Although most of the important information is in the book, you will find yourself wondering how you got certain questions wrong in the Review Questions or in the Do I know This Already Quiz. Chances are you will also find that sometimes the so-called ‘correct’ answers in the back of the book are wrong.
Oftentimes, much of the information you will need to know in the book will need to be verified using some internet research. I don’t expect Mr. van Vugt to be absolutely perfect. However, I have found *numerous* errors in my study.
Be forewarned.

I bought this book as it was one of the most recommended one on the internet, reddit for instance.
It took me around 6 months to “thoroughly” read and practice everything explained in the book and I passed the exam on the first try. I indeed had used Linux for many years but never been a “power user”, fyi.
So, about the book? If you understand and master all the topics addressed in the book, I believe you are just well prepared enough for the exam. How long it would take depends on your prior experiences and knowledge and how much time you can devote to this exam. There’s no shortcut 😉
There indeed are some typos, but you should be able to notice and correct them yourself if you are a serious Linux user to have the RHCSA exam in mind.

The book is an excellent source for learning and studying for the RHCSA exam. While this is, and should not be, the only source for exam prep, I would say that this is at the top of the list. The book offers access to the Pearson website with additional content and a few videos that are extremely helpful. The concepts are easy to remember and the author even provides instructions on how to set up a small practice lab. The book arrived on time and was extremely helpful in focusing studies on the RHCSA and the administration of Linux systems.

Alot of the answers have typos and some of the documentation has typos. This will cause non-experienced linux admins to spend time verifying the info.
Some exercises fundamentally don’t work. For instance, the podman build from the Containerfile requires “–cap-add=NET_RAW or NET_ADMIN” to bind the socket inside the container”. This is not explained anywhere and you will spend time mining forums.
Also alot of the practice exam questions are very confusing. Not sure what is actually meant on some of them. Some of the questions require some forum diving that isn’t explained in the book.
This is not a good book for beginners.
He gets his books out the fastest but be ready to verify alot of things.

Very good book. Very complete.
Kane A Price –
Some stuff is very slightly out of date, but that’s what happens with computers and books. Very easy to google when needed.
Dave –
The book covers exam objectives.
Sebastian –
Very good explanations and the control questions are useful for self-learning, up to date for 9. Clear Recommendation.
S. McVicker –
Book arrived damaged. Content is superb. Web Resources provided online are wonderful.

There are lots of errors in this book that prevent someone from repeating the exercises as intended. On the same red hat linux distribution, certain examples just don’t function as advertised and the author omits mandatory expressions in some commands that otherwise would work but as it is written it will do nothing to the effect that is being discussed in the exercise. Ex. Page 304 instruction is to type echo “*.debug /var/log/messages-debug” /etc/rsyslog.d/debug.conf. This is supposed to write *.debug /var/log/messages-debug to the /etc/rsyslog.d/debug.conf file as it is described, however it is missing the > character between the two phrases to direct standard output to the file, so as written, it will not redirect the first phrase to the file. Unfortunately this is still the best option out there for learning the material.
