My hermit crabs loved the new substrate right away, it’s soft and easy to dig into if not packed too tightly. Easy to clean and no excessive odor that other brands tend to have. Overall very happy with my purchase.

We put this at the bottom of our leopard gecko’s tank to give him more of a natural environment. This makes it look more attractive and natural looking.

He has really enjoyed this and we have even caught him digging in at a few times.

We added in a little bit of moss for moisture retention but you probably don’t need to do that because this will naturally retain moisture.

This is a very large bag and it is compacted. When you add water it expands. When you consider the amount this comes with and the price it is being sold for this is a great bargain. This is on average about $5 cheaper than I see similar products going for in the stores.

Like other reviewers, I purchased this for seed sprouting. Some reptile substrate has very long strands of the coir that don’t do as well in gardening applications. This one is a little longer than what we normally get from gardening centers, but it’s still on the small-medium size. The plastic wrap around the block tore slightly and got rained on where I had it. It didn’t smell and it dried out quickly afterwards. Wonderful versatile option.

Love using this for plants, bugs, animals etc. My Praying mantis, and Darkling beetles both seem to like it very much and its a really nice substrate to mix into potting soil for plants. I will be purchasing this again for sure.

I am using this in a reptile cage. This is for a baby, so it is a small enclosure. I think that I should be able to use this for quite a while before I need to change it to something else. As long as you scoop as soon as there is excrement, it will last. It also does well with high humidity. I also enjoy the fact that there is SO MUCH included in the package that I will not have to repurchase for quite some time. My snake loves it, and so do I! And the mice do not seem to mind it, either. Well, at least they do not mind it for the 60 seconds they are able to enjoy it…!

Had this a while before using it — got a new, larger tank for my bearded dragon and decided to try this out. Good thing it’s a big tank — this makes a LOT.

It comes in a big brick. I originally thought I would put it into water, but I quickly realized I needed to reverse things. I put the brick into the tank and added LOTS of warm water (several gallons — it says 4-5 gallons, but I think it was more like 6 or even 7. It breaks apart easily in the water, although I broke off the bottom (under water part) a few times and submerged the top. Dragon was watching me intently this entire time — I have just had a sort of carpet in his tank.

Anyway, as this soaked up the water, it became very fluffy and light. Dragon was thrilled when I put him in the tank with it — seemed to like how soft it was (that said, old habits die hard, and he still spent most his time in his hammock).

He spends most of his time in his tank at school, and he dislikes pooping in his tank, so I have not tried to clean this. I assume I would scoop out some of the substrate along with the poop, and I think we’ll be good, but as I said, I have not yet had the honor.

My only issue is that I wish I’d had a better sense of the volume and a strategy of how to use less than the entire brick. The substrate comes right up to the level of the doors in my tank, so when I open the door, I tend to have stuff fall out. Obviously it would have been better to have a little less. I need to scoop some out, but I don’t have a good idea as to where and how to store it. I’m sure I can’t compress it the same way.

My tank is about 40” by 20”, and the substrate comes up maybe 6” (rough estimates). If you don’t have space for that, I’d suggest taking the block outside and seeing if you can cut it in half (as I think about it, I don’t think that would work) or maybe putting the small side down into your tank and pulling off the wet bottom while trying to lift the dryish top out of the tank — scrape off as much wet as you can and leave the block to dry (that’s my best idea, but realize the block will still be heavy).

Overall, I really like this. It has taken on more of a dirt consistency since it’s slowly drying out (I suspect I’ll want to add more water from time to time). But again, it’s fairly light and soft. Nice substrate.
