This piece cleans well, and as my son practices his exercises, the sound protrudes out as it should! It’s slim neck is different than his fellow French horn players, but I think it’s sleeker looking and doesn’t affect the quality of sound.

Took up horn again after 50 years. I’ve tried a few different mouthpieces. I started using it today. I could immediately hear and feel the difference. My wife said, “That sounds better than before; is that the new mouthpiece?”
    – Easier higher range
    – Less embouchure fatigue.
    – Fuller sound

My son’s French Horn teacher suggested this mouthpiece for him and he loved it. A local music store was asking $80 plus tax for the exact same item, so this was an excellent deal. This mouthpiece is more comfortable for extended playing time and my son played with improved tone, especially in the low end, when he made the switch.

Mouthpieces, like underwear, are a very personal and individual matter. I used this model for many years a long time ago and thought it was great.
Then I stopped playing for 22 years. I recently started again, and began using the same model mouthpiece. This time, since I could afford to do so, I decided to try a variety of different models, as I never in my previous years of playing was really happy with my low range. I researched mouthpieces, and for the first time in my life realized that there was practically an infinite variety of them available to suit any player’s needs as every horn player has a slightly different muscular apparatus and lip size and shape. It became obvious that no one mouthpiece does everything well. I found that some made my low range speak much easier, but made the high range much more difficult, and vice versa. In general, I found that a narrow bore and small inside diameter was great for high range, but death to the low range. A wide open bore with large inside diameter was fantastic for low range, but death for the high notes. A very deep cup adds darkness and mellowness to the tone, but sacrifices some precision in attack accuracy, etc., etc. I won’t tell you which one I finally settled on because it may not work for you. My best advice is : try lots of different ones, then stick with the one that works best for you.

I just started playing the French horn again after a 30-year hiatus. I only took an 8-week course in college, so I’m not very experienced. So I ordered two mouthpieces. The Blessing one has a much thicker rim, and I found it harder to play. But the Selmer one is perfect for me. I keep it in my pocket so I can buzz in my free time. Some people check their email when they’re bored; I buzz. I find it helps my playing, even if it doesn’t help my social skills. Anyway, this is a great mouthpiece and it’ll last for years. And if you decide the French horn just isn’t for you, places are buying silver now, and you might be able to get a bit of cash for it.

Slightly smaller cup size then the mouthpiece my daughter had been using. Recommended by her teacher, it works well for her. Sometimes you have to try slightly different sizes to see what works best for you.

At age 72 I bought a Holton French Horn and am resurecting my skills. Getting lips spoiled by fifty years of kisses by my dear wife into shape took a bit of effort. The mouthpiece that came with the horn has a narrow rim that tends to cause swelling. The new Holton MDC mouthpiece is a great improvement. The service was good. I recommend that all septuagenarians taking up the orchestra’s most recalcitrant instrument give the Holton MDC a try.

I ordered a French horn mouthpiece for my son. The box was busted, the plastic was already cut, and the mouthpiece has been used and is dirty.
