OK, so today I became a believer. I have a collection of some nice Alto MP’s but I decided to try this Selmer. This S-80 C** is just awesome. Very easy flow and gentle tone with a Rovner ‘Platinum’ ligature that grips at the posts and helps deliver a full, rounded tone. Bright is good in its own right but I prefer a smoother flow without the excess ‘crispness’ of ‘bright’. I don’t want to incite with my music… I want to ‘relax’. I’ll have to experiment with ligatures and reeds and learn this MP even better. I know it can reach to the very soul. It’s already half way there. Thank you Selmer!

My son is an alto player of a few years, and has been playing college grade pieces since his second year. The only problem, though, was how airy he sounded due to having a bad mouthpiece. We switched to this, and his sound is completely tight. Definitely worth the purchase.

I’ve been playing for 7 years now, and after 7 years I finally bought a mouthpiece other than the standard that came with my sax. This mouthpiece plays beautifully and definitely has more of a clear tone with a more classical sound to it, I’ve used it for jazz and Concert and it sounds really good in both, remember it’s the player that makes the sound and not everything depends on the mouthpiece, so if your looking to just enhance your already good skills, get this. A jazzy tone comes from emboshure and the way you play and the style you play.

I upgraded from the 4C Yamaha to this mouthpiece what a big difference I changed the ligature and it worked even better I used a leather ligature at first and I didn’t get good sound I had trouble I was going to return it but then I used a metal ligature and it changed the difference it’s easy to play it was hard with the old ligature so for me the the best thing was to change the ligature on the mouthpiece, what a difference I was getting ready to return it but I put the optimum vandoren ligature on it and wow what a big difference

My son, who is a fairly accomplished high school musician, switches between this mouthpiece and a metal jazz mouthpiece. He loves both; he says this one is easier to play and because it is “rubber” gives good deep tones (he uses it more for marching and concert band, and uses the metal mouthpiece for jazz band, as it has a brighter tone). His band teacher and also his private teacher, who both play with many groups locally, also use this mouthpiece as one of their options, and both suggested it.

Of course, this mouthpiece is far better than the generic mouthpieces that are found with lesser-brand saxophones than Selmer. But for me the sound never worked on my Mark VI. Recently I gave the mouthpiece a new try, after I had lost the C* I had bought in the 80s. The sound is robust and blaring, which makes it particularly fit for the marching band. But I can bring up more appreciation for the Selmer Soloist-mouthpieces for classical work or the Meyers for jazz. They seem to be made for the instrument and sound more consistent over both the high and low registers. Also the transition from C# to D in the middle is easier.
