This is my first jaw harp, so I don’t have a baseline to compare it to. The packaging was surprisingly humble for the Shamanicshop Lighthouse jaw harp: the jaw harp arrived wrapped in plastic and sealed with tape. There was no packaging box or instructions. The harp sits in a wooden box that scissors open, which is nice. The harp itself appears to be well constructed and feels good in the hand. It has a nice heft. Since there are no instructions that arrive with the harp, I watched a few Youtube videos to learn how to play it. It is easy to get started and play. Now making it sound good will undoubtedly take some time to master. By changing the shape of the oral cavity and moving the tongue around while flicking the trigger, you are able to make some interesting sounds. I found myself wishing that it were louder, but I realized that it is louder from the audience’s perspective. This is a lot of fun and perfect for a beginner like me!

This piece and the case is comes in are very cool and feel well made! I got this just for fun and because it seemed like a fun new hobby to learn… I have since discovered there is a bit of a learning curve as I cut my lip open the first time I tried to use it. But I do not fault this product with my misstep as I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I have since practiced a bit more and gotten a little better. This is easy to use and very cool once you get the hang of it but like any musical instrument, it takes a minute to learn. The sounds it makes are pretty much as I would expect and with some Youtube instruction I am slowly learning the correct way to play this. This would make a very cool unique gift for any music lover or player. Worth it.

This is a first for me but I thought “how hard can it be”? I received this jaw harp and almost broke the case before I figured out how it opened. Worse, once I got the harp out, I discovered that I had absolutely no innate talent for playing it.
Fortunately, the Internet provides many, many videos of people who want to teach others how to play and in short order I was getting the thing to make a reasonable noise. However, the instructors made it clear that this particular model was for intermediate to advanced users. Beginners would do better to start on an easier model.
Examining this particular jaw harp, I note that it is very well constructed. The clearances are tight and accurate. The sound is difficult (for me) to produce, but when I get it right, it has a great “twang”.
Like everything else musical, success takes practice. This particular model will make a great present for someone who is past the beginner phase and ready to move on to a higher quality instrument.

My dad told me about these a very long time ago, but I never actually even held one in person. It is a very cool musical instrument, that makes a very unique sound. It is also a fairly easy instrument to learn how to play. As soon as I received it, never having held one, I tried it out and was actually surprised how easy it was to make decent sounds. After about three videos on YouTube I realized I must be a natural LOL for real it is just that easy.
It is built very ergonomically, it just felt natural to hold it right, right out of the box. The body of it is very well made, out of thick stainless steel, and the Reed consists of a thinner metal, but still quite sturdy. And it sounds great.
They make these probably in a million different designs, but all with the same basic function. It is just a vibrating reed you pluck, at the opening of your mouth, to use your mouth and throat as a resonance chamber. A very cool instrument, been used in bluegrass since the beginning. I am a collector of many strange things, and this fit right in.
Overall, it is very cool, vintage instrument. If you intend on playing one, you could start with a beginner model, but why? You are not going to damage this one learning on it, so it will still be around by the time you master it. It’s even good enough quality, you can probably even pass it down to your child if you so wish. It also comes in a pretty nice wood box that has a magnetic closure, which is a nice touch to keep it clean, and in your pocket so it’s with you whenever you got a minute to practice.
Just a very cool item, if you collect vintage stuff, or are just interested in something unique, this is for you. I love mine, highly recommended. You get what you pay for, there are cheaper on the market, but they sound cheaper.

I already play the jaw harp, but was looking for something a little more professional quality, and more ergonomic for long jam/recording sessions (my other jaw harp is a hand-forged Viking style, and is not very ergonomic for my smallish hands).
This jaw harp definitely exceeded my expectations! It’s extremely ergonomic, I can play this thing for SO MUCH LONGER than my other jaw harp, with much less hand fatigue. The build is very sleek and smooth. The curled end of the tongue means I can actually EASILY flick it back and forth, unlike my Viking style jaw harp. Within a few minutes with this jaw harp, I had already managed to produce some great tunes that I’ve been struggling with on my Viking jaw harp.
Also, it is LOUD! And clear sound as well, a lot of “toy” jaw harps go big on volume but lack in the “pleasing sounds” area. If you think this sounds quiet to you when you play it, try doing a little video recording while sitting a few feet away from your phone and see how it sounds – decent jaw harps tend to be louder to the audience than to the player.
The case is beautiful and AWESOME, soooo glad I don’t have to find a random tiny food storage box to keep this beauty of an instrument in. Fits nicely in my EDC bag/purse/pocket, easy to carry with me so I can practice whenever the mood strikes!

Wow what a difference a really good quality jaw harp makes, I’ve had a cheaper one that doesn’t have a curled end so you’re unable to strum back n forth and the bit just kept getting stuck on my finger! This one is so easy to play, has such a great sound too. So if you’re going to get one I recommend this, buy cheap buy twice! Wish I had known this. Overall I love it, I’ll be able to play better, come up with tunes etc, this is a fantastic harp 🙂
