Shimano normally means quality. That said, on the very first ride, the threads stripped out of the left crank causing my pedal to fall off. The manufacturer never replied regarding the warranty. I understand that factory defects like this can happen, but being met with silence soured me. Ultimately I paid out of pocket for a replacement of the left crank. Once I fixed that, the rest of the set works quite well. The gear ratios are wide giving options for both speed and power, and runs smoothly as it transitions between gears. I would say it’s a great set for the money, but a defect like this, means I can’t give it a perfect rating.

    Nice low priced crankset.
Replacing the set on a 1980’s Trek 7300 hybrid.
I didn’t want to pay more for the replacement crank than I did for the old bike.
Plug & play. Looks good. Light weight aluminum alloy.

The only error I made was inadvertently ordering from a Chinese vendor.
It took 6 weeks for the crankset to arrive…….

Bike came stock with crank gearing of 24-32-40t. I was doing a huge amount of ghost peddling on my e-bike around 12-15mph which is my “sweet spot” traveling along paved trails on 20mile treks.

This gave me higher crank gears of 32-40-48t which significantly reduced ghost pedaling.

    Highly recommend.

I cycle fairly regularly (150-200 miles per week), but I live on a dirt road so the first and last 0.2 miles kick up a lot of grit into my chain ring, chain and cassette. Consequently, things typically start wearing out in 6 months. I’ve been using this particular chain ring for several years and have not had any issue.

This is exactly what I was hoping it would be in terms of an upgrade. It is not as light as a high end part, but it is definitely on the spectrum of quality parts, being a legit mountain bike crankset. I added it to a cheap bike as an upgrade to a bike that already had Shimano Tourney running gear that I ride as a hybrid/commuter bike. It replaced a three piece steel crankset. I could feel an immediate difference when lifting the bike. And it rides SO much better. Shifting is far superior and smoother, and it feels like there is a much more solid connection when pedaling. I also went with a 170 instead of 175 crank arm which I like a lot better. I can spin a lot faster and can lean with that side down, even continue pedaling on some steep leans to that side.

Be careful when ordering – the silver one is actually the Tourney model number, not the Altus. I ordered the black one, but got shipped the wrong one by mistake. Checked model numbers and it was under the Tourney line (which is the lowest one Shimano makes) It lacked some of the internal facing teeth and profiles for better shifting.

However, the problem was remedied quickly. The crankset is good mid-entry level…better than any walmart bike would have (and even better than some of the baseline namebrands at the moment). I got the 28/38/48 to upgrade from my 24/24/42 on my old Trek 820. I love the new gear range – much more usable for around town riding – which is what i do most of. I still have some issues shifting down to 28 under load, but I think that is a cable or limiter adjustment issue I need to work through, not a product flaw.

Overall – for the price, it is definitely worth it!
