This review is for the Sun Joe 24V-X2-TLR14 48-Volt iON+ Cordless Garden Tiller
I settled for this tiller because larger gas powered alternatives have been out of stock for weeks…
The Good:
* Exceptionally maneuverable (5/5 star)
* Exceptionally light (5/5 star)
* Easy to assemble (5/5 star)
* Very, very powerful motor. Only rocks can stop the tines from spinning
* Reasonably priced at $259
The Bad:
* The trigger handle is designed for safety, but just makes it hard to use
* The charger is cheap compared to all of my other battery chargers
And the Ugly:
I’m a strong person, and let me tell you, this thing is a *lot* of work.
The only way to make it till is to stand in one spot, work it a couple inches into the soil, and slowly pull it backwards over and over.
If you’ve ever lifted weights think of using a rowing machine.
Using this method you can till about two feet a minute, about two inches deep. And all the while you’ll be fighting the trigger handle.
The problem is this thing is so exceptionally light that it just bounces across the ground. After tilling two 25 foot rows I borrowed a neighbors rear tine Troy-Built tiller, which did the same job in 1/10th the time at 1/100th the effort.
I found that you’ve got to fight the Sun Joe to get it to till *already* tilled soil…
Compared to my other battery powered yard tools (two push mowers, a wheelbarrow, a leaf blower, and an awesome weed eater) this thing is a total flop.

Love this item. Not going to “break” a garden with it but is perfect for little jobs in the yard. Battery lasts a long time. I have the Sun Joe mower so it uses the same battery. Tough as nails!

Got this for my mother in law, she really likes it, she has balance issues and this tiller is great because it does a good job without pulling her around.

I had to give up my heavy duty rototiller as it got pretty old and was very heavy. This one is light, fairly good power and easy to maneuver. It is great for medium to light jobs and the price was right. Arrived on time and was easy to assemble. Not recommended for stony/hard earth but perfect for normal usage.

I ordered this thinking I might get a few months of use out it before it died. To my pleasant surprise, this thing is a beast. If you’re looking to do sod-busting, this ain’t for you. I have a rear tine, full size tiller for that. I was looking for a small tiller to work between rows and to do raised beds. I have had it, and sometimes abused it, for about a year now and it has far outpreformed what I expected. The tiller has excellent power, the battery life is over an hour on a charge, and the thing is super easy to lift and use.
I highly recommend.

It’s not really a tiller per se, more cultivator, or at least somewhere in the middle. It will not break ground, it can’t cut sod, far too light and not sharp enough. I tried to see if with enough time it could get through virgin sod but it just couldn’t in any reasonable time frame. But for broken ground it does a great job. Tills plenty deep for any gardening, busts up dense hard packed soil at depth that’s full of rocks. Battery lasts impressively long and charges impressively fast, and I’m comparing to Ryobi 40v tools. Maybe it helps that there are two instead of all being in one, no idea, just impressed. Can easily till an established 900 sq ft garden (with paths between rows not being tilled) on one charge. Handles VERY well given the wide grip, that’s the best part of the thing really. The wheels that flip back so you can till full depth without needing to push it down is great. Only issue I have is the power button sticks so it won’t always turn off when you release which is a hazard, maybe mine has a defect. Have to wiggle it to get it to pop and shut off. So, can’t break ground, but after that it’s exactly what I needed.

I have used this tiller twice so far. I use it in our three small gardens in our yard. It’s very light and easy to use, so light in fact, to make it go a little deeper, I sweep it side to side, which makes it very nice for weeding. To make a dig a little more, I tilt it to one side a little. I bought this unit to replace our 6 hp gas-powered tiller, which tended to dig up our sprinkling system and destroy everything and its wake. For our purposes, this unit is so much nicer. I’ve had it about a month. So far so good.
It takes me about a half hour to till, after which I charge it for about 20 minutes and it’s already full. When the batteries are fully drained, the instruction manual says it takes 55 minutes to charge.

We like the fact this cultivator is light weight and battery powered. It is very easy to use and being lightweight it is easy on the back and other muscles. It is best for lighter duty gardening like getting a garden ready for planting that you have already established. It is like other Sun Joe products we have purchased in the past like their snow blower – works greats, powerful, and easy to operate.

This review is for the 14” 48v tiller. I see some reviews for other models here as well…
This tiller is very light and maneuverable, battery life is really good for as small as the batteries are. They charge quickly – I ordered an extra set so I can have one set charging while the other one is in the tiller.
I was hopeful that I might be able to break some new ground, some of the reviews and YouTube videos made me think I might be able to tear through sod with this machine. It’s too light for that, but once the ground is broken it does everything I could want it to do in a very lightweight and maneuverable package. I didn’t take off any points for it not being able to cut through sod, that probably wasn’t a realistic expectation in the first place.
All in all I couldn’t be happier with my purchase, even if I did have to rent a big rear-tine unit to do the first tilling on the ground I planted.
Hopefully the batteries will last.
For anyone looking at batteries, the Sun Joe and Snow Joe 24v batteries are interchangeable.
I like that this is part of a modular system. I may get a chainsaw and a snowblower yet too.

easy to use and the charge holds long enough to do a job. I need to pass a few times to till deeper but that is ok. it is interesting that something that looks like a toy can do a good bit of work.

I went to use the tiller this year and a battery was bad. The battery did not have 3 hours of use. I called customer support, and they were very helpful. The only problem on the battery replacement is I have to return the bad battery before they will ship out a replacement battery. I understand part of the reasoning but now I have to wait how long to get a replacement. I would think they would send out the battery and if you did not return it charge you for the battery. I would have been glad to give a credit card number so I would not have to wait for the replacement battery.

Easy to use, pretty light, breaks up my clay soil with no issues. Decent battery life. Very happy with my little tiller
