A little while back I picked up a Supvox DIY lyre, which had multiple issues, but which I thought I’d try to salvage at some point. One of my main gripes was that there was no rhyme or reason to the strings, so I thought another set — where the gauges, numbering, and colors gave a degree of guidance — might be an improvement. Spoiler alert, it wasn’t. The quality just isn’t there. Granted, they were going on a cheap CNC routed instrument that’s probably intended mostly for kids, but if it can’t even improve that, I don’t know that I’d trust it on something more expensive or professional-grade.

I ordered this set of 15 strings because they were described as harp strings, which was backed up by the photos of a western style lever harp and a western style pedal harp. The photos showed at least 3 red strings and at least 2 blue strings in the set, with the other strings being white. The photos also show that each string has a number tag on it, ranging from 1 to 15. On western style harps, it is customary for the “C” strings to be red and the “F” strings to be either black or blue. The colored strings guide harpists on where to place their hands, so they are necessary and very important. Unlike the sets of strings in the photos, the set of 15 strings I received contains one YELLOW string, only ONE RED string, only ONE BLUE string, 2 GREEN strings, and 10 white strings. Also, the number tags attached to the various colored strings in the photos do not correspond to the number tags attached to the various colored strings I received. For instance, the photos show that #15 is red, but my #15 is green. There is zero use for yellow strings on my harp, but there must be enough red strings to mark the “C’s” and enough blue (or black) strings to mark the “F’s”. Even green strings might work in a pinch to mark the “F” strings, but come on…all the F strings in a package should at least be the SAME color. These are somewhat thin gauge nylon strings, perhaps useable as replacement strings for higher notes, but I think there would be a higher likelihood of success trying to install them on lever harps rather than on higher tension pedal harps.
