David W. Brown –
I USED TO BE a fan of Tilley hat.
Years ago, a good friend presented me with a Tilley hat, but after a few years I lost it, having left it behind in a Las Vegas (Nevada, US) hotel. It had been an excellent hat, till then. I had looked to replace it, but I could not find a local Tilley outlet or store. Then I went to a nearby REI store, about five years ago. Bought one for about USD 70. Same airflow at the top, good canvass, cotton, not nylon, good snapping brads at the top, excellent securing string. It’s served me well, but not a Tilley hat; and made in China.
Fast-forward to last month, August 2023, when I recently purchased a Tilley LTM6 Airflo hat from a gift shop at Butchart Gardens near Victoria, BC. Same pricey CD$100+, about USD $95, no problems with it, so far, but it’s made from “RECYCLED NYLON” yet “NEW MATERIAL ONLY.”Huh??? (Hello????????? Contradictory labels.) Nylon, not cotton, not canvass. No longer guaranteed for life, either. And made in China, not Canada. Labels tout Canadian persnikitiness, but deliberately-inconspicuous other tiny labels say China. Shame. This product has gone downhill, fast. Next time I look to buy a quality outdoor hat, I’ll go to my local REI outlet store a kilometer away, Chinese-manufactured or not.
