Dave –
A well designed compass. It has the right scales for the maps I use, including both km and mile types. My one complaint is that the azimuth ring is off alignment by one degree. This won’t stop me from using it – it’s not like I can maintain a bearing within one degree anyway, but there’s really no excuse for this, and I will notice it every time I use it.
Bookoo –
Exactly what I was looking for. I bought 15. A couple of them would get hung up and I had to thump them to make them work.
Mark A Ludvigson –
I ordered 4 of these compasses to teach basic orienteering to a youth group. 3 of the 4 worked perfectly. One was a little wonky and pointed about 10 to 30 degrees off unless you tapped it to free the needle. This made it so that 3 of the groups completed the course easily but one group was lost wondering around the park trying to find the first way point. In the end that group required me to help point them in the right direction at each turn. Order a few extra would be my advice if you are ordering these. Not a dealbreaker and could have just been damaged in shipping if it was placed too close to a magnetic source.
JimT –
Super happy with the compass. Simple and elegant.
Ron Friedman –
Good price. Simple to use. Trust it more than the inaccurate phone apps.
Marie –
Great little, inexpensive compass. Does what it should, nothing fancy. The ability to adjust magnetic variation/declination is critical and hard to find at this price point.
Will it last forever? Does it hold up as well as expensive units? Probably not quite. But it’s held up well to some abuse (backpacking and mountain biking excursions, it’s my backup nav system should my GPS fail) so far. And at this price I’m happy to buy another if it lasts even a few years.
Unless you’re doing advanced navigation tasks – and instead you just need a basic compass (with settable mag variation/declination) – here’s your next purchase.
Laura Ledford –
Excellent quality, well made orienteering compass. Classic size (2.5x4x1 inches). Just got it. I am well acquainted with this type of compass. So far, so good.
S Veinot –
Good quality for the price. Seems to be accurate

I was in need of a manual backup compass for hiking and saw good reviews for this Orienteering Compass.
It is lightweight, good quality, and accurate. It fits nicely in a pocket in my hiking pants. Comes with a user guide pamphlet that has good information. I’m very happy with this purchase.
