This book covers everything I wanted to know about Ubuntu and written in a concise and easy to understand way

My blunt and honest opinion: the book is thick, but its a lot of filler text. When I picked Ubuntu Unleashed, I was expecting to learn about every part of the Ubuntu operating system, both the desktop and server distributions. Of course, this book does talk about Ubuntu but stays mostly at the surface. Most of the text is either explaining general concepts that aren’t specific to Ubuntu or listing third party libraries we could install on it.
What I am looking for in a book on Ubuntu, is one that would: 1) give a general overview of the architecture of the OS and design choices that were made by the development team, 2) a clear list of differences from the previous version of the OS, 3) a complete review of all the desktop features and everything you can do with the desktop version without using the command line with screenshots and all, 4) an in depth review of all the components of the OS and how to configure them (ie: nmcli was not even covered in the book!, netplan was only briefly mentioned, cloud-init completely overlooked) , 5) A troubleshooting section for common problems, 6) A virtual machine section that actually shows how to tune the OS for use as virtual machine (not a list of VM vendors), 7) A section on cloud operation and optimization.
So in short, less general stuff and filler and more in depth content would have been appreciated. I’m leaving two stars because the book isn’t the worst. It is well written and has a good structure, it just doesn’t teach the reader enough to become knowledgeable about this OS.

The author states that Ubuntu Linux Unleashed 2021 Edition is targeted towards users with an intermediate knowledge of Ubuntu/Linux. Rightly or wrongly, I consider myself an intermediate user as I’ve worked with several Ubuntu based distros, have decent command line skills, good knowledge of the file structure, and have done several hours of Linux based troubleshooting.
As much as I like historical context, the author starts the book with roughly 100 pages of ‘bloat’ about some of the most common linux applications with interesting historical asides.
The text then delves into the file structures and the command line, two aspects of Linux most users would like to learn more about. The problem is that, like several other computer books, THE AUTHOR DOESN’T INCLUDE A PACKAGE OF FILES AND DIRECTORIES TO DOWNLOAD. This is analogous to a programming book that doesn’t give you access to the source code used in the programming activities. Hence, all of the command line instruction is entirely generic and somewhat useless.
The author then delves into more advanced topics like running a server via Linux. This is a huge jump in skill level and running Linux on servers should really be a totally separate book.
This book fails largely because the author doesn’t have an understanding of the needs of the reader. Instead, the author just follows a generic instructional-guide type format which rarely yields much useful material.
I have found the ‘Linux Pocket Guide’, published by O’reilly, to be far more useful in learning about Linux. The author provides a package of directories and files that make the exercises worth while.

How much more basic can you than having to set the timezone on your server. This book, at least nowhere I could find, even mentions how to set the timezone on your Ubuntu server. Further, the listing above states that the book has 752 pages. It doesn’t. It has 647 pages. (And, yes, I am talking about the 2021 edition.) There are far better books than this one!

Great Book and well written. You can download a bonus chapter to pdf on Pearson (inform it.com) but you can’t register it even tho it is a Pearson book; the ISBN is not recognized. The product description also says a companion DVD (not that I need it) however there was NO DVD in the package nor was I even unable to download that companion DVD from inform it.com. The lost of one star here is due to missing DVD and not being able to register it on inform it.com – this is a Pearson publication and the ISBN is the same as way is sold on this site as well. A little disappoint in this – while I have Linux, etc already not too what else was on this companion DVD that I might be interested in . Which is why I bought the book and not the kindle edition.
