Like a lot of players when I first saw this bass years ago I thought it was a gimmicky bass with the price tag reflecting Billy Sheehan’s endorsement. How wrong I was. The only good thing about waiting was that now Yamaha is on the 3rd and according to Billy himself last version of this bass. When I pulled it out of the case this bass just felt different. It felt massively solid and yet not over weight. I tuned up and more amazement started. Starting with the neck it is superb. Though P-Bass like it plays nothing like any P I have and my collection of bass guitars is extensive. This neck is fast and the lowest string height of any bass I have ever had. No buzz and the scalloped frets insure there is never any choke at the top frets. None. It is so effortless to play that it has actually thrown my playing off. No longer having to dig a bit makes fingering a breeze. The sound is massive. It does not matter whether you use the separate outputs or not. The sound is still huge but articulate. Using both outputs in a recording situation gives you infinite control over lows and highs. Through two amps OMG! Is it worth the price tag? It is to me. My whole collection is going. I can never see myself playing anything but this bass. It is a game changer for me. This is not what I’d consider a great bass for say 60’s Motown. This is the bass for rock and metal. Hands down no matter the price. One bass to rule them all!
