Kevin Wilbourn –
Incredible mouthpiece. I had played on Schilke 59 (for most playing) and 60 (for Tuba doubling and Jazz/Funk) since moving to Bass Trombone 16 years ago. I liked my Schilke mouthpieces, but didn’t like having to change and re-tune constantly. After playing with a couple small groups where low brass was largely absent, I found the Doug Yeo series mouthpiece to be the perfect compromise.
I have thundering low range – and the tone is better than the 60. I can handle any tuba line easily on this one. I also didn’t lose any upper register, and frequently pick up and play 1st Trombone parts on my bass with absolutely no issues. Sure, a small tenor would be better for these parts, sure an actual tuba would be a better sound for the ensemble as a whole, but the flexibility to jump between parts (at least during practices) is exactly what I wanted, and exactly what I got.

Great Bass Trombone mouthpiece great for the lower register

I wish I had bought this mouthpiece years ago! I put it in my Yamaha YBL622 and, TAA-DAA! It’s like it was made for me, this mouthpiece- thin lip on the mouthpiece, but not TOO thin (reminds me of a Schilke in that it feels rounded) and it has a nice, deep, oval bowl, and pops notes out in the fattest, brick shapes. This is an awesome bass trombone mouthpiece. I recommend it to those with a developed embouchure, or tuba players moving back to trombone.

This is EXACTLY the same mouthpiece as the Doug Yeo Signature model, but in silver plating. It is made by Yamaha just like the far more expensive original. I was initially hesitant to try such a large mouthpiece, but was astonished how easy the Yeo is to play. It’s certainly an adjustment compared to something like a Bach 1.5G or other starter mouthpieces, but worth the effort. Beautifully dark sound, great articulations, and huge low range. This is a great starting point for experimenting with modern bass trombone mouthpieces as it costs 1/3 the price of most artist level models.

I’m new to bass trombone and it came with a Yamaha 58L mouthpiece, which is on the small end of bass trombone mouthpieces. I was coveting the gold-plated Doug Yeo mp but at $180, no way. This mp is terrific and for me, there wasn’t much of a transition from the smaller mp. I love how it sings especially at the bottom end.

I want to start saying by I think this is an incredible mouthpiece. I am the son of this account owner and have successfully hit a double pedal C scale on this mouthpiece, and that may not be much but I’ve only been playing for a year. As to be expected, it’s higher range is something to get used to, it’s more difficult than a tenor mouthpiece. But thats pretty obvious it being a BASS trombone mouthpiece. I must say even with my experience with effort I can reach high C, and high Bb. The low range on this is incredible. Once you learn how to use this with trigger notes, it is incredible. Im a experienced saxophone player, but decided to pick up trombone. I play Baritone Saxophone and love the low parts so I used my F trigger trombone and this mouthpiece to play the tuba part with my friend, and it works great. This works quite well with an F trigger, it doesn’t just work on bass, which I was really worried about. I havn’t had any tuning issues due to the mouthpiece being bigger, and if it is I havn’t noticed, I would assume a slight adjustment of the tuning slides would make perfect. If you are looking to expand your lower range this is the mouthpiece for you. It also has incredibly increased my ability to play high notes on a tenor mouthpiece, as the bass forces me to really use a lot of air. I was able to reach a double high f on tenor mouthpiece. Not in context, I am still getting there but this mouthpiece improves your lower range, and trains you for higher range. I am in love with this mouthpiece and I hope this review helped.

I’m a tuba player and decided to double on bass trombone. I didn’t like the mouthpiece that came with my bass trombone or the old one that I had. This gives me the tone that I was looking for and I can play more relaxed with it.

This is, by far, the best bass `bone mouthpiece I’ve played. I have a 60 year old Conn 110H and the range of tone I can get, from soft and warm to that sharp, percussive bark we all need sometimes, is amazing.
Be advised, that 8mm throat will suck the wind out of you fast, but it’s worth it.
Great mouthpiece.
