The very first time I used this set, I kept bending this knife so badly, that I had to straighten it out every 3-4 oysters.
For the cost of this kit, you do get a lot though. If you look at the average cost of a decent shucking knife, it’s going to be almost double the cost of this whole set.
If you just want to be able to pop open shell fish and don’t care if the blade bends over and over, this is a pretty good value. However, if you want a knife that is going to last you for years to come, I’d look elsewhere.
The included pocket can come in handy, assuming you aren’t doing large oysters, as they just won’t fit. Personally, I prefer to do oysters without the pocket and just use a towel or two (feels like I have more control).

This tool is simply AWESOME and deserves a rare 5* plus rating. Prior to getting this, I could never get oysters open with out a major to-do. It was so bad, that I would skip home prep of one of my favorite treats and stick to restaurants ($$$$). On a trip to visit relatives, my adult nephew showed me this device and a few tips on how to use it. Once I got home, I ordered this and it worked great; so much so that I can now “shuck” a dozen oysters in less than 10 minutes!!
The trick is to find the hinge on the oyster (typically the fattest part of the oyster) and work the tip of the knife into that soft spot by working it back and forth in a wriggle type motion. It doesn’t take much force. More a working motion to work the knife tip in. Once the tip goes in a few millimeters, you can turn/twist the knife and break the oyster open. Then work the flat edge of the knife along the oyster to cut the muscle off the shell. The “holder” works with smaller oysters and protect the hand holding the bivalve. Larger oysters can simply be held with a hand towel. The knife is made of thick steel that can handle the work of prying open the oysters.
Can’t tell you how much I love this simple kit. Thanks to this product, I can enjoy my favorite farm-raised oysters any time I want (except in months that don’t have an “R” in them – but that’s another story!). Now if I can find a really good mignonette sauce recipe, I’ll be set!

My family has been eating crab for years and cracking the crab is part of the eating rituals. But the cracking tools we used were nut crackers or small wood mallets and I’ve felt there has got to be different utensils that are designed to make this job easier, if not better. Better so you aren’t crushing or pulverizing the shells and mashing the meat inside.
So like I do now with every purchase I make, I start to search/review for a product that will suit my needs. There are a lot of seafood crackers available – different styles, colors, functions – makes your head spin!
Finally I narrowed down my choice to this Zyliss Seafood Cracker. It’s simple but functional. I liked it’s efficient styling and color. It is plastic but hard, durable plastic. It seems to hold up to even the hardest shell.
I’ve used it a few times now and it is a great investment. It cracks shells without shattering them and performs as well as a metal cracker. It seems durable and made well. Even when your hands get a bit scummy, you’re able to grip and use the cracker.
I ordered a few of these to give to my crab loving family along with the HIC Lobster Crab Seafood Pick. Both are a great combination and a big improvement over a nut cracker and chopstick.

Excellent quality. So much easier to peel prawns using these scissors. Well worth the price!

I was very excited to try this product. I just had purchased some fresh lobster and began cracking them open. This item snapped in two while I tried to open up my first lobster claw. Very disappointing.

It is a very sturdy and attractive item.

Wow! Finally a product to make easy work of shucking oysters! We really love oysters, and have purchased numerous products over the years. My husband inevitably goes back to the “towel method” while I nervously watch, hoping he doesn’t gouge himself in the process. Too afraid to try this method myself, I really appreciated the detailed, step-by-step instructions for using the Zyliss Oyster Tool and Knife Set. Perhaps it is common knowledge to everyone but me, but I did not realize there is a rounded side to the oyster that needs to face down in order to preserve the oyster liquor. While I do appreciate the detailed instructions, the shining star is the actual unit.
Safety is at the forefront of this product. The uniquely designed silicone pocket for the oyster to sit in, coupled with non-skid feet, creates a secure environment for shucking. The curved knife edge and serrated blade make easy work of opening the hinge, and dislodging the muscle that keeps the oyster attached to the shell. The extra thumb guard on the knife is an added plus when met with resistance. Having a specialized holder for the knife at the base of the unit keeps everything neat and tidy.
Clean-up is a breeze with the dishwasher, and the added bonus? A five (5) year warranty comes with this fabulous product! This one is a clear favorite in our house – love it!

works very well, and make is nearly (knock on wood) impossible to cut yourself while opening oysters. I have had guests who have never opened one before use this product with ease, I have not noticed the issues that some commenters have made with regard to the size of the oyster pocket, I have found it equally effective for both large and small oysters. My only knock is that the knife has quite a sharp tip, which can, if used over-zealously, chip/break the ends of the shells, however this was easy to get used to and quickly stopped being an issue.

Safe, effective way to shuck oysters.

I grew up and live on the East coast and am a big seafood fan. This oyster tool is not the one I grew up with but it is much safer for a novice oyster shucker, and suits a modern kitchen. Also at my age I find it excellent for better, safer grip while opening the hinge. Easy to clean in the dishwasher and the knife is safely housed in the holder for storage

My family has eaten lobster in Maine fresh out of the pot for decades. Our archival nutcrakers have gotten rusty and wobbly and It is incredibly hard to find crackers that actually work. These are amazing. They may be on the pricey side but they are totally worth it if you eat lobster frequently. I have NOT tried them on crabs.
