Edit, 3/19/14: bought two more of these. Have had many storms and outages since this review. Happy camper.
I’m a Panamax fan, but the recent Panamax models have opted to make a screwball side-plug design which WASTES SPACE.. so I reluctantly had to pick another brand. The only two others I trust are Belkin and Tripp-Lite, since I already have both, and they’ve saved my equipment many times. (I seem to experience a storm or other outage at least once a month for over 20 years, no matter where I’ve lived.)
But the Belkin, doesn’t specialize in filtering out line noise; Tripp-Lite, does. So, this Isobar, which I just bought here at Amazon, is just like my other one, except larger and more powerful. It WILL accommodate a large adapter — maybe not all versions. I have an old ZIP parallel power supply, which is the largest adapter I own. It will fit without obscuring the plugs beside it, though barely. Most other adapters are smaller than the Zip, so should fit. Pick the outermost plugs on the ISOBAR (or any other surge suppressor), see if that works. If it doesn’t, get a top-priced Belkin model that has good reviews. BE SURE to check the reviews, as not all Belkin models are good. (I bought one recently that I returned to Amazon because it had serious issues with the power on/off switch that reviewers reported.)
NEVER scrimp on cost with a surge suppressor. ALWAYS get the best model you can afford. Having said that, you don’t need to buy more protection than you need. But never settle for a power strip alone, and never settle for a lower-priced knock-off.
The Isobar shines in two ways: a) eliminating line noise, and b) sensibly deciphering a real threat from mere variance. Look at the other reviews here about treadmills. Ironically, that’s why I bought this Isobar, due to those reviews, though I don’t use a treadmill. Even more ironically, the very day I read those reviews, I went shopping and someone standing in the cashier’s line, asked about surge protectors for a treadmill in the store. So I was on-hand to answer!
A final note: the unit was easier to plug in, than others: it has a flat plug so doesn’t stick out from the wall like other surge protectors. Additionally, it was wrapped with extra-long twist ties, so I only had to unfold one ‘layer’ of the cord and then retie, to get it to compactly sit with all that extra cording, in the back of my computer. Where, it is plugged in along with my A/V equipment. And, immediately I noticed an improvement in my cable and DVD picture, after plugging them all into this one unit.
So now I’m an ISOBAR fan. Well, there is one negative: the actual WARRANTY doesn’t offer a dollar limit, so contradicts the Amazon description, here. Moreover, for the warranty to apply, ALL your equipment, including your phone lines, have to be protected by Tripp-Lite. Further — and this is very ambiguous — the warranty says “Reimbursement dollar limits will be equal to that of the Tripp Lite power protection protector.” Since NO dollar limits are specified anywhere in the ‘Ultimate Lifetime Insurance Policy’ section, how does one interpret that?
I don’t take these warranties seriously; they mainly serve to show that the manufacturer doesn’t want to have to pay up, so makes the protectors as best it can, to avoid claims.

This is the best surge protector there is. Get this one! You can research it if you like, but this is where the internet will point you. And you’ll likely think it pricey, but if you have any sensitive musical or computer equipment, this protection is the best out there and it’s actually cheaper than some other professional grade surge protectors. The ISOBAR is built of solid metal, I mean solid, so the box itself will last forever. This is a professional grade surge strip.
Now there are some plastic trip-lite protectors meant for your TV stuff. They’re cheaper and work fine, at least I’ve never had any problem. But I definitely want the ISOBAR for all my musical plugging in. I bought my first ISOBAR over 20 years ago, and it still works like a charm. I’ve bought 5 more since. I have a project recording studio that I use these in for pretty much everything I plug in there, and other than making the move to installing an overall surge protector at the studio’s breaker box, in which if I did, I’d pop some big bucks for, these are all I will ever use.
Now, as great as these are at protecting your equipment against the all too frequent and city common city power voltage surges, particularly in areas with hydroelectric power, all surge protectors have their limitations. While they protect against surges, most surge protectors don’t deal with sudden drops of voltage. And I’ve been told by my amp guy, it’s the drops that you should worry the most about. The ISOBAR is designed to recognize a sudden voltage drop and let the power latch down a bit slower to protect the equipment. Now there are some power conditioners out there, quite a bit more expensive to be sure, that are actually designed to deal specifically with sudden drops in voltage. Of course the main culprit here is city power going out altogether while you have your equipment running. And the best protection for that is a battery backup that will keep all your equipment running at a steady voltage level even without power. This is your best protection by all means. But the grade of battery backup you will need in a music project studio is going to cost you a big old wad of cash. And, you are going to have to run some power strips out of it anyway, so they might as well be ISOBARS.
And one last disclaimer. Despite everything you do. There’s one equipment killing culprit you just can’t do anything about. And this one has gotten a few of my machines. Static electricity! In particular, the static caused by nearby lightning strikes. It travels through the air, so there’s just no way to block it. But you can try to keep the studio as centrally located in your dwelling as possible and that will really help.
One way or the other, you want some surge protection at the power source, and this is the surge protection strip you want.

I purchased this excellent surge suppressor with a metal case as replacement, but later as the main addition to my hi fi audio system; stereo. I also have a lamp plugged in, too. I have an earlier surge protector for my turntable. The wonderful thing about the Tripp Lite Isobar Surge Suppressor is the design, and adequate spacing of the electrical outlets that you can plug in for a hi fi audio, or AV system. Normally the spacing on most surge protectors is very close, and crowded; and the insertion of a plug is difficult. Not so with Tripp Lite; there is adequate spacing, and industrial, quality outlets. The delivery of this fine, efficient Tripp Lite Isobar 6 outlet surge suppressor was fast.
Furthermore, although I think the metal housing could be thicker, Tripp Lite Isobar the 6 outlet model (ISOBAR6ULTRA) white coloured is built like a tank. It is, and looks solid! Besides the important indicator lights, you get several cover plugs that can cover an outlet if it is not in use; I have now one not in use, and is covered.
I have had this Tripp Lite Isobar 6 Outlet for over two weeks, and there is no low buzzing noise that I have heard so far; that is one of the main reasons I took to write, and post a review on Amazon, Canadian web site! There are a couple owner, users of Tripp Lite surge suppressor who observed, actually heard, and complained about such low level noise. However, as I listened to music on my hi fi audio system, there does not seem to be any such noise, faint or otherwise that can be heard.
I am not saying that there is absolutely no such low noise coming from any such Tripp Lite surge suppressor products, but I have not heard any such extraneous, audible noise. I think that the manufacturer should seriously consider, and examine any perceivable noise from any of its Tripp Lite surge suppressor products because there are persons who connect such surge suppressors to a hi fi, or AV system. In conclusion, I believe that this Tripp Lite Ultra Diagnostic Isobar 6 outlet surge suppressor is a very good choice for a hi fi stereo, or AV system.

Iโve been using the 4-outlet versions for years to help protect my more expensive electronics.
They can be a bit pricey but are a great value if you can catch them on sale. The product seems more appropriate for more expensive electronics like TVโs, stereo equipment, musical equipment, etc.
I purchased the 8-outlet model and as expected, it has the same solid construction and feel as my other TrippLite surge protectors.
Be aware that depending on the plug types youโre trying to connect, you will not be able to fit 9V โwall wartsโ side by side on every outlet, as the spacing between outlets is limited.
Also, the cord connects to the plug at a set 45 degree angle, which can sometimes interfere if youโre sharing a duplex wall outlet with something like timer, since the timer has to plug into the lower outlet and the TrippLite has to plug into the top outlet and ends up making contact with the timer. Not really an issue having the ability to swivel the cord connection would be a nice feature.

I use this to protect my radio equipment. It is very well made. The one thing you might want to check is the orientation of the pins on the outlets if you need to plug in “wall wart” type power supplies. You might need to use short jumper cables for those, because they might not fit otherwise. Other than that I’m very satisfied with this unit.

Iโve dealt with Tripp-Lite for many years, both professionally and personally. The Isobar surge protectors just work. Every single piece of technology in our house has them installed. We had a major surge that killed the oven and dishwasher, two older surge protectors gave their lives to protect the equipment plugged into them. All the other surge protectors did their job flawlessly. Worth their weight in gold.

Feels nice and sturdy, as if it’s going to last 20 years.

Industrial grade, will last years. I sourced this unit as it has some of the highest power surge protection ratings, over 3,000 Joules. Other brands charge the same price, many have half the surge protection value, and do not have the same build quality. Five star product!

This is an easy to use surge protector. I provides excellent protection for valuables. I like how it has so many plugs. Very versatile , place it on the floor or hang it on the wall or on the back of your desk. Good stability. One of the best if not the best surge protectors.
