I like it very much, easy to use and comes with tons of software. Excellent product small but very powerful.

Overall the product works great and worth the money. Yes for me, Id rather choose a product that has a brand on it and the seller is direct from Amazon or from the brand maker itself. Other than that its your risk.

I just bought the Asus Vivobook S400ca with Windows 8 and wanted an external dvd/cd player to go along with it. The device looks good and works really well; however, the setup was slightly confusing. The software that comes with the device is soley for burning & copying cds, no media player software is included so I had a hard time figuring out how to actually get my dvds to play. However after a few google searches, I realized that this was mostly an issue with Windows 8 (which does not include DVD movie playback). Instead, you must download a media player online. After reading a couple of reviews/suggestions, I decided to install VLC Media Player, which fixed my problem immediately. Overall, the device is great, but it would have helped if the instructions were a bit more clear 🙂

My HP DV9500 DVD drive became unrecognized by the computer, even though it spins up when DVD is inserted. I tried everything to get it to recognize it. Eventually ordered another internal drive, but that did the exact same thing. After spending some quality time with google, I found it a common problem with these HP computers that it overheats and causes problems with the soldering on the motherboard. Recommended fix was to reflow the solder. No thanks, thats beyond me. Side note, my god that HP computer runs HOT! I could write a short book on the problems I’ve had with it. Doubt I’ll ever buy HP computers again.
So I bought this external DVD drive, first and only one I’ve ever used. I think it looks pretty cool. And it functions fine, though it seems a bit slow to respond compared to the internal.
I used it maybe two times and then put it away. Then miraculously, my internal drive suddenly was recognized and I haven’t need this thing! I had read several folks had the exact same experience.
Anyway, can’t hurt to keep this thing around for the next round.
So bottom line, this drive works quite well on windows 7 computers and looks awesome.

On first inspection this drive seems flimsy, and it is somewhat. It’s basically the electronics of a drive with a plastic case, pretty light. The tray simply pops open but does not extend to allow access. You have to pull the tray open. I was cautious at first as I was afraid I’d pull the tray out of the case. Takes a little practice to seat a disk in the tray.
I didn’t install any software, though it came with a software disk. I simply connected the supplied cable and connected it to my Mac mini and put in a cd. The green light started flashing – which amused the cat – and the disk image appeared on the desktop. ITunes recognized the disk immediately and I was able to listen to a cd, then import some cds to the hard drive, efficiently and with no difficulty. I had one error message that there was a problem with the disk but it turned out that the disk was not completely seated, hence the earlier note. The unit recognized a dvd when inserted and it mounted and played with no difficulty. I have not tried burning any disks so can’t speak to that yet. When I do so I’ll update.
I gave this five stars as, so far, it has performed well as what it purports to be: an inexpensive, portable optical drive, which is what I was looking for.
I use it connected to a Mac mini, OS 10.85.
***Update/NB: I paid $29.99 for mine. The current price given is higher.

NO OPTICAL DRIVE ON MAC MINI 2012 MODEL: I recently purchased a Mac Mini 2012 model. This is the first Apple Mac Mini that is manufactured without a built-in optical drive. (Call me old fashioned, but I’m really dependent on optical drives!)
This ASUS unit was the perfect solution for me. It is reasonably priced, presents a good appearance, and is easy to install — just “plug and play.”
ABOUT THE USB CABLE: Included with this unit is a USB Y cable, with two standard USB 2.0 male plugs — one on the end of a thick wire, and one on the end of a thin wire — designed to be plugged into two USB ports on a computer. The third male end attaches to the ASUS.
On the Y cable, the thick wire seems designed to carry both data and power. The thin wire seems to carry power only (no data). I have found that this ASUS unit successfully operates with only the thicker wire attached directly to one of the computer’s USB ports — NOT to an external USB hub; it pulls too much juice. I can plug in the thin wire if I need to, otherwise I simply let it “dangle.”
All and all, this ASUS unit is a cost-effective solution to provide an external optical drive to any computer lacking one.

Cheaply made but works.

I’m glad I ordered this one because it has lasted over seven years before dying. I used it occasionally throughout those years and it worked fine. It had a little noise when it was spinning but not bad. It was slim and easy to store. I would recommend it if you are looking for something like this.

This external DVD driver is absolutely perfect. I use it several hours a day and there is nothing else to say about it.
