Bought 2 of these – one is loud one is not. When I saw loud I mean loud – installed in an open-test-bench style case it can be heard outside of the room with the door shut. Found out when moving a few TB onto the drive. It’s like an intense scraping sound while it is heavily writing or reading, and then will just make a ticking sound during regular seeking.

Comes with a required extra power cable that wasn’t in the photos of the listing when plugged into a normal desktop PC.
However, good price and for a 12TB drive and has 10.9TB accessible in Windows which isn’t the worst ratio seen.

It made so much sense to buy this drive. Despite the uneasy feeling that comes with buying a refurbished HDD, they backed it with a 5 year warranty.

1st drive: I plugged it into a Windows PC running as a server. The disk initialized fine and I added it to a Storage Pool. After a restart, the drive was un-initialized again and would not re-initialize with GPT.

    Ordered a replacement via Amazon.

2nd drive: I plugged it into that same Windows PC server. The disk would not initialize. I plugged it into my daily usage Windows PC to verify it wasn’t my server having issues. My PC booted into recovery mode due to detected HDD issues. The drive had multiple errors and when I booted into Windows, the drive would not show in Disk Management.

    Ordered a refund via Amazon.

I did all the steps properly. Shut down PC, remove power cable, add drive with power dongle and SATA (with known working SATA power + data cables), use Disk Management to initialize GPT. When that didn’t work, I tried a different PC, with and without the power adapter, different SATA cables and ports on the Motherboard. All to no avail.

Maybe these will work for you. I wish they would have for me.

From some of the reviews, I was a bit skeptical, but I decided to take a punt, and I’m really impressed. Coming from the US, it has taken just over a week to arrive. What came through was a 12TB HGST drive. The product line was (HUH721212ALE601), which turns out to be their Helium Ultrastar drives, which were some of Western Digital’s higher-end line for data centres. Looking through the datasheet on that product HGST sold them originally with a 5 year warranty

The hard drive I received had no bad sectors, and had a continuous runtime of about 4.5 years and 77 power-on-cycles. Presumably, they are all switched out at this point from datacentres, regardless of condition, and replaced with new ones. At the commercial level this probably makes sense, but for individuals – these drives probably have got a lot of life in them. They are theoretically, designed to have a 2.5 million hours Mean Time to Failure, which in theory would equate to many decades. Also, as hard drive failure tends to happen along a bathtub curve – (lots at the beginning, lots towards the end, and fewer in the middle) – these drives have survived that first hump.

Of course your experience and luck may vary – and the reviews here will be skewed by people who’ve experienced data loss at some point and are mad. What I’d say is : Have your most critical data (wedding, baby photos etc.) backed up at least once, and ideally at least 3 copies. But if it’s just for movies, films, games and other things – easily downloadable and replaceable stuff on a media server – you can just use this as a data dump drive.

A drive like this could last a few months, or could potentially last another 20+ years.

If you do have issues, it can be returned, Amazon offer a return policy, the manufacturer offer a 5 year warranty (not sure how well it’s honoured). And at the time of buying I had an option to buy extra insurance for an extra ยฃ5 for 4 years protection – which I took. So between all of that, I feel like I’d get my money back if these fail in the next few years. I wouldn’t get the data back of course, but I have backups if necessary.

The box also comes with some very helpful leaflets, support guides, a warranty certificate and a (molex?) cable which you may need if you experience issues. I plugged mine into a Wavlink dual HDD dock and it worked straight away with no faff (see photos).

Noisewise it’s a hum when on. Fairly quiet, but is noticeable if it’s very quiet outside, such as late at night.

Data transfer speeds – I got about 250MB/s sequential write speeds when first adding data to the drive which is very fast.

So overall for under ยฃ100, I’ve got 12TB of high quality storage media. Not as good as brand new drives of course, but about as good as you could get. Your milage may very but from what I’ve seen so far I’m very impressed!

Safe and secure ? But haven’t these disks been used 24/7 in a data center ? Yes, but that is why they are inexpensive and, with a few good installation choices, they will be very reliable. In fact, if a drive fails in the next 5 years, the seller will replace it. This seller has to have faith in these disks but why? For starters, the HC520 HUH721212ALE60 has a fairly low failure rate. Another important factor is the number of times the drives have been cycled off and on. My two drives showed that they had been running constantly for the last 3 1/2 yeaars but had only been turned off and on 14 times for one and 12 times for the other. In comparison, the hard drives in my system, a desktop build in 2019, showed about the same number of hours but had nearly 4,000 power cycles, on / off . Guess where drives get the most stress.
At this great price and with a 5 year guarantee, I purchased two and put them in a mirrored RAID setup. This means that I sacrifice 12tb space, but I get peace of mind knowing that if either fails, no information is lost. It would take both drives failing together to lose data. (Reads are a bit faster and writes a tad slower)

One final note. The seller includes the power cable adapter most desktop users will need to run these big drives That is thoughtful and appreciated. I highly recommend this seller and these drives, with the recommendation to run in a mirrored RAID pair.

On advice from a YouTuber, I went looking for used, enterprise-level drives. I wanted higher capacity drives for a home-built NAS that I put together from an old 2nd Gen Core i7 PC with 16 GB of RAM that wouldn’t be able to upgrade to Windows 11.

I blew the dust out of it, added an MOD card to give me up to 8 SATA 6Gbs connections, and updated the DDR3 RAM to the motherboard’s 32 GB max. Then I found this seller on Amazon, offering just what I was looking for: a pair of 12 TB 7200 RPM drives with 128 GB cache. I was especially pleased with the 5 year warranty! That really sold it for me, and I placed my first order.

The drives were very well packaged and arrived in great shape. I was extremely pleased with the addition of the power adapter cable with each drive that eliminates the 3.3V orange wire that most SATA power cables for consumer PCs have. In the enterprise, this line is used to power down the drives when not needed, and also to make sure the drives in a big array don’t all power up at once, possibly straining the power supply.

If you have a regular home-type PC, you’ll want to make sure that the orange 3.3V wire does NOT go to this type of drive, or it will appear to be dead. No worries, either clip the orange wire or use the included adapter cable, which is a brilliant thing that this vendor included. They also have a nice little info sheet that explains pretty much what I just did. Very thoughtful. You can tell this vendor is careful, thoughtful, and well prepared.

I was so happy with the first two 12 TB drives, that I ordered two more the day after I received them. And now I just ordered more. 12 TB for this price is just a real bargain. Because of the pricing and care this vendor has offered, I made a third purchase just a few minutes ago!

With my total of 48 TB of drives installed, I then installed TrueNAS Scale on this old PC, and a few minutes later, after watching instructions on several YouTube channels, I was up and running with a RAID Z1 setup, giving me 32 GB (12 GB is used as a parity drive for redundancy) of free space from these 4 drives.

The drives are not nearly as noisy as I was expecting, and that’s a plus. I added two more 120 x 12 mm thin fans blowing across the drives just to make sure they stay cool. That’s not strictly needed, but I feel better about keeping them cooler. The new fans make a bit more noise, but they just become background white noise after awhile. The NAS PC is about 8 feet away from where I’m sitting now, and I don’t really notice it. Doesn’t really matter, since it will be moved to my mechanical room where my 1 Gbps switches and fiber entry reside.

So I ended up with a cheap, fairly quiet, reliable (so far anyway), and fast network storage system for my home. Besides file storage, it’s also going to be my Plex movie server, which TrueNAS can easily do.

I’m buying more drives to give me a bit more security with RAID Z2. My old tower PC gives me space for a max of 8 drives. I’m just going to keep stuffing these 12 TB babies in there on the installment plan, so to speak.

Next on my list is to add a PCIe 2.5 Gbps LAN card, buy a cheap 2.5G switch, and connect our two major computer users in the house via that switch to the NAS PC, giving us 2.5 times faster speeds. I’m glad I prewired our house with CAT6a cable. The present PC on TrueNAS runs at the max of the present 1 Gbps network with no significant lags or drops. I’m typically getting 110-115 MBps (mega BYTES per second) file transfer speeds. The drives are certainly not the limiting factor in this setup.

Now I’ll just give the drives a chance to “season” and break in a bit before it goes into full operation. I’ve already done scraping and extended S.M.A.R.T tests on the present drives in the array with not a single issue. TrueNAS does all that without much input from me. It’s very easy software to understand and use, and the price (free) is right.

Very happy with this product and the vendor!

Got 2 of them imported into the UK. Neither had any bad sectors and they had 2 and 4 years of power on time which for enterprise drives is nothing. Very happy and would buy again for only ยฃ5.41 per TB

Large storage for low access data. It is refurbished, but with 5 year warranty. I use this drive for large media file storage; in other words not used often, so I can take a chance on a refurb drive. Consider your access frequency if you are concerned about the drive failing. I also have an additional copy of the data so I am not worried about long term reliability. I have not tested for a long time and have not loaded very much data on the unit yet.

Mine arrived with almost exactly 4 years worth of use on them, so a bit better than advertised. I did full surface scans and burn-in tests before use and they came out at 100%. That was about 4 months ago and they still read as perfect, with 0 errors.

These are enterprise grade drives and perform like it. That being said they ARE designed for server rooms and tend to run hotter and louder than your average consumer drive. Keep your expectations realistic and know what you are buying: high end, high capacity drives at a fantastic price.

Drives work. Quiet. Networked on my NAS and saturating my 2.5 G/b home network with transfer speeds. Storage space is as advertised.

Crystal Disk Info says they have 30k+ hours on them. Advertised with 5 year warranty. Guess I’ll update this in 5 years or when they take a crap and the RMA does or doesn’t work. Whatever comes first.
