I’m self admittedly a protein powder snob. As a runner who usually runs in the morning, I pack in a lot of carbs in during my morning but only moderate protein, and I like my afternoon snack to offer a little more protein. The easiest and most filling way to do that is a protein shake. I had a love affair with the Quest powders for about 6 months, but I started to get burnt out on them. The longer I drank shakes, the more I could taste the weird aftertaste that basically all protein powders have. I tried some other brands, but I couldn’t shake it, and thus I have bounced around trying to find something I can live with.
I got to a point where I was not willing to buy any more expensive powders, because I was not seeing any difference in taste/quality for the price. Decided to give this one a go, since I had had their bars before and liked them.
To get a feel for the sweetness level/flavor on it’s own, I tried it plain, just blended with almond milk. Not horrible, but I was over it by half the bottle and just chugged it. If you use a shake blender, it’s very smooth in consistency. I also tried it with a cup of strawberries and almond milk, and that was pretty tasty, but there was a bit of a funny aftertaste. Not nearly as bad as I have had.
My *favorite* experiment was this recipe: 1/2 a scoop of the powder, 1 bottle of light Starbucks mocha frappuccino (if you love your carbs like I do), 1 tsp of chocolate pudding mix, and a few ice cubes. With the protein in the Starbucks drink, you wind up with around 20g protein and around 200 cals. It has a very similar taste and consistency to Starbucks frappuccinos (reminds me of the S’mores one).
The scoop is pretty big in comparison to most other brands I’ve tried, and while I didn’t have a problem with chalkiness due to that, it could be a little strong when mixed by the directions, so I diluted it a little more.
Overall, its a pretty good protein powder as it is. If you’re weird about your protein like me, it’s a good base to blend in with other shake ingredients. You definitely can’t beat the price, and the quality greatly exceeds it!

This is my first time trying the Pure Protein brand and I am glad that I did. The previous brand I used, although tasting good, had a problem with clumping which was really nasty in my mouth. With the other brand I would be drinking and then chewing the undisolved powder which is not a pleasant experience. This Pure Protein product didn’t have a single clump after mixing it up in my little Bullet blender with some milk.
I bought the Pure Protein 100% Whey Powder Frosty Chocolate 1 pound tub and it taste very good with whole milk. It did not have the level of chocolate flavor that I was expecting, but then I only used a single scoop. I imagine that if you used more powder the chocolate flavor would be more intense. I haven’t tried it with plain water yet so I can’t comment on whether it would be good or not. I would imagine that it would be though and might even be good hot, like a hot cocoa. It did not have any bad aftertaste as compared to some other protein powders. It also did not have the gritty mouth feel like some other protein powders.
I was so impressed with the product that I am going to order the Vanilla flavor next. I have found that the Vanilla flavors makes for a good base flavor and offers an opportunity to mix in more ingredients to increase the variety so things don’t get boring. I have read that others mix peanut butter and even protein bars of various flavors in the Chocolate flavors. I haven’t tried that, but it does sound like it would be good, although it will add more sugar to the mix.
I would also recommend that you take advantage of the “Subscribe & Save” option for the nice additional savings. You can always cancel or change the delivery schedule at any time. I liked the FREE shipping too!

I’m a simple man. I like to exercise, I like cost efficient protein powder, and I need lots of whey protein concentration with low sugar. This brand does a great job of keeping prices low with quality high, but the Vanilla flavor in particular is not it. I don’t care much for flavor as I blend this protein with other flavors but the sweetness of the vanilla, be it natural or artificial, is not pleasing. I like to mix my shakes with fruits and other flavors to make it enjoyable…I was unable to mask the flavor of vanilla throughout my time with this product. The chocolate version is just fine, I would suggest avoiding vanilla.
