I have a headphone setup that is near end-game (for me): MacBook Pro (Tidal) > VMV D1 DAC (via Audioquest Carbon USB) > THX AAA 789 Amplifier (connected via these Red River XLR cables) > Focal Elex (balanced). I used to have some LyxPro Balanced XLR cables that connected my DAC to the amp and it was good but I wanted to do an experiment in an attempt to strengthen the audio signal flow in my setup. I wondered if upgrading the XLR balanced cables would have any impact on sound. My conclusion is that yes, there are positive impacts on sound by using these Red River cables over the LyxPro cables. Now, are the improvements the Red River offers leaps and bounds over LyxPro? No. Here are the differences: I listened to ten songs that I know very well. In these ten songs, I noticed better instrument separation. Background instruments that seemed 8-feet away from the microphone (recording source) now seem 1-foot away. Mid-bass is more pronounced. When listening to BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE by The Talking Heads, I noticed the bass line whereas before, while there, it was more in the background. In MANDOLIN RAIN by Bruce Hornsby, the mandolins strumming in the background near the end of the song move way up in the image. Speaking of image, in EYES WITHOUT A FACE by Billy Idol, near the end of the song there’s a rattle type of instrument that travels across the image from right to left that is so perfect. I did not notice that before.

So, in short, while there are not huge differences in sound, there are differences that a person like me appreciates and finds this purchase well worth it.

Longtime Audioquest consumer; first time purchasing a pair of xlr cable’s. Outstanding quality; when measuring for the proper cable length, I didn’t take into account the size of the actual connector itself(which is included in the actual advertised length of the cable); I should have ordered the next size up but fortunately the cables fit perfectly without adding undo stress on the cables ( a little slack in the cable would have been my preference).

In need of shorter XLR cables to connect the DAC to the amp, I decided to splurge a little and purchase these audioquest red river cables. At first I was planning on buying the mogami gold cables, but when I saw the red rivers were only about $25 more per pair, I decided to take the chance.

The cables they replaced were mogami gold 6′ cables. Not sure if its because the red rivers are shorter, but the sound of my system has completely changed for the better. The presence and authority the music has now is incredible. I could on more about sound quality but I don’t have time to get into details right now.

The cables are also built extremely well and the way they plug into the XLR ports is something I didn’t expect. They fit so snug. Like there is no slop or wiggle room at all with the connections. Much different from a regular XLR cable.

Needless to say, I’m very happy with these cables. 🙂
