Keith Carlsen –
This book is better than nothing, it alerts potentially otherwise ignorant readers that Hammond organs have a distinct following, market value, and sources for parts and service. However, it is not thorough historically, technically, or musically.
There are other organs besides Hammonds, there are other Hammonds besides B-3s hooked to Leslies, and other kinds of professsionally recorded music besides jazz and Chicago blues that people still enjoy-even Ken Griffin (although personally I can’t stand him). It’s a pretty lopsided look at an instrument with a lot of history, only a small slice of which is considered “hip” by the Jann Wenner-thinking people who control today’s popular magazines. (I write this on June 1 of the year 78 MM-which brings to mind “Specialization”, a bouncy 1960 tune riffing on this very subject…)
If you want a thorough Hammond education, I’d start with the original Hammond service manuals and brochures followed by some of the period literature for organ hobbyists, as well as print and web sites devoted to the sacred cows of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff and the DeFrancescos and their little branch of the big organ tree. Soap operas, Black churches, skating rinks and even the notorious Anton LaVey all have a place in Hammond history which the jazz organists are not overridingly more important than.

This is an excellent resource, reference, and reminder for all of us who love Hammonds and Leslie’s. A great read, and loaded with information, both musical as well as technical. For the lover of all things Hammond or for the curious, this book sorts out all the models from day one, plus the history of the original company, and the “how it works” section. A nice companion section on the Leslie cabinets and inner workings as well, with model differences as well as the technical info. A very good book I highly recommend. There are others also, but this is a very good starting point, whether you know a lot, or only a little.

Steven Mitchell –
A nice read and very informative on a host of topics pertaining to the greats of the Hammond world.

For all Hammond Organ fans. A must have book. Well researched and written. Useful examples of Hammond Licks, drawbar settings and Leslie control settings.

If you love the Hammond B3 as so many of us do, you’ll love this book. It’s overflowing with details, pictures, anecdotes and trivia about the greatest organ the world has ever seen, as well as tons of fascinating info on performers. It also fully covers the other part of the B3 equation, the Leslie speaker. I’ve read it twice cover to cover, and will probably do so again. It’s a quality book printed on fine paper stock, with a nicely-laminated cover. Highly recommended for aficionados of jazz, rock and classical organ.
A B Carrington –
An informative book. Particularly given its size, a hardback version would be preferable. Good value though and very nicely written with clear illustrations.

Unless you’re a tech, or have been playing and servicing your own Hammond since the 60s, this book is for you. It is essential for any musician who plays or has a band that includes a Hammond organ. The “B3” is the glamor model, but it’s not the only instrument in the stable. (An M3 was used on Booker T & the MG’s classic 1962 hit, “Green Onions.”) The book covers Hammond’s entire line, even the pretenders! Since there will never be another classic Hammond organ made, “The Hammond Organ: Beauty in the B” is required reading for those of us charged with keeping our instruments working and ready to pass on to the next generation. Buy one for yourself and for a keyboard player you love.

I have had a great time with this book. I read it through once and I’ve gone back read parts of it over and over. It is entertaining and informative. One thing I found disappointing was that the audio files that are supposed to be at Backbeat […] are not available. At least the link the book gives doesn’t work. I emailed Backbeat Books to see if the files were still available and did not receive a reply. Some of the leslie pictures and captions are not exactly accurate but all in all it is an enjoyable read for anyone who is interested in the Hammond / Leslie combination.

Dr Strangelove –
Marvelous! Very pleased with this book all about Hammond Organs. Phwoar!!

I got this as a gift for my organ playing friend.
He loves it!

A great treatise on the world’s most famous organ.
