This BLACK+DECKER MATRIX 20V MAX* Drill + Jigsaw Combo Kit with Storage Case (BDCDMT1202KTJC1) is $100, which I find pretty expensive but is heavy duty. It is pretty good quality, except it does not come with any drill accessories besides a tiny little saw attachment and a tiny Phillips screw attachment. It has one charging base and handle, and two heads one of which is the drill and the other one is the jigsaw. So unless you already have a set of different sizes screw and drills, or needing different saw types, it’s not as versatile as I would like. But again, this is the most durable and heavy duty set that I currently have, especially for the price.

Good tool for basic diy. More than enough power to drive screws into studs. The saw attachment is light weight and easy to handle. Easy blade install and removal, ergonomic and battery-compatible with my other B&D cordless tools.I used it on 1/4″ 3/8″ & 1/2″ plywood no problem. I have doubts that this tool will withstand any commercial use but I think it’s perfect for diy’ers.

I have had several Matrix drills with multiple attachments including the circular saw, an impact and drill attachments. I was excited to add the sander to my list and will update once I get a chance to give the sander attachment a full workout. For now, in this review, I am comparing the updated BDCDMT120C vs the BDCDMT120. First of all, this drill has plenty of power for jobs that don’t require a ½ in shank. I have used the base for several projects already and the newer version however has a couple new things which are different, but not necessarily improvements in my opinion.

    First, bit storage:
There is the lack of a bit holder (or at least a traditional one). The new model Matrix now has a magnetic plate on the top of the drill which is ok, but is very loose and I am sure the double ended phillips / flat bit that is included will be lost in no time. See the pictures where the older version has a mechanical grip/slot and is better based on my use of both.

Next is lighting. The new model has a LED light which is activated by the slight pull of the trigger. It’s ironically in place of the bit holder on the old drill, so not sure if that had anything to do with their decision to not include a holder or not. I have seen other B&D drills with a bit slot on the back of the handle as well as on the top of the body (yes this part frustrated me and I may mention it one more time). That said, the older model does not have a LED light, so the new model is a winner here. The light is useful and is well placed to actually see the object with various attachments.

The last difference is the rubberized areas for grip on the drill. On the older version, everything black is rubberized for extra grip. On the new version, the orange is rubberized and the black is hard plastic. This is probably not a huge deal to most, but the side of the drill has almost zero grip. When a matrix attachment such as the drill or the impact, this means that it will be more prone to sliding. Don’t think about putting it on a roof or unlevel surface. The older version has a rubberized area along the black and decker label which has served me well to keep it in place. Why they made this change is beyond me, but I can assure you mine has stood the test of abuse and it’s still in one piece.

Overall, I have to recommend this Matrix line as it is very practical and allows for

While this is a review of a free or reduced price product, it is an honest review of the product, no different than if I purchased the item at full price.

This is a great starter kit for someone that is needing a drill and sander combo (or just a solid one of either). This is a very good value, it’s powerful enough, it has a great case, and this would be an amazing gift for someone just going out to live on their own.

    Pros:

    Surprisingly powerful
    Good organization
    Made well
    Nice case
    Great gift idea
    Good value

    Cons:

None (other than I would only use it for home stuff and not commercial)

Until they were stolen, I loved my DeWalt tools. I decided to give this a try and see how it compared. I know that it isn’t fair to make a direct comparison to a tool that is roughly 3 times the prices, but rest assured I will keep my expectations in check with consideration to the price of this tool.

Let’s start from the beginning. The case the tool comes in is garbage and the liner inside it is even greater garbage. It arrived already bowing and flexing. The case is designed in some modular fashion with the intention of connecting to other cases, but the case is just so flimsy I can’t imagine hanging any extra weight off it. Don’t get me wrong, I understand they are trying to keep the price point down but with that in mind I would rather receive the tools without a case and knock about $10 off the price.

Now let’s talk about what really drew me to this system, the interchangeable tool heads. This is a fantastic concept that I hope to see more and more tool lines adopting. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes a dedicated tool is needed either for power or for form, perhaps even for convenience, but most people can benefit from a tool system like this. Lower cost, less weight to carry, less space taken up; There are many benefits. Maybe you need to get a second power head because you use the impact constantly and the other tools heads sporadically. I have noticed that the tool heads don’t always connect easily. This is because every time you run the tool the power head stops in a different position which means it might not be in the same position when switching tool heads. You just need to rotate the tool head slightly and it will pop into place.

The tool heads feel well constructed. The drill has plenty of power and even gripping with all my strength I was unable to stop it from rotating. I even tried driving 3” screws into hardwood and it was no problem. The quality of the battery will be a long-term test. I have had 15-year-old batteries from Hilti that worked perfectly but 2-year-old Ryobi batteries that won’t hold a charge. Time will tell if the batteries hold up.

The biggest weakness of this system in my opinion is the power head. It feels super lightweight. Admittedly, I have never held a drill that was missing the transmission and drill head so maybe it’s not that much lighter than a normal one but it really through me off. I like many people tend to associate heavier tools with higher quality tools. Not always the case but it is surprising how often that is accurate. Weight aside this screw gun isn’t brushless. I haven’t used a power tool with brushes in a long time. It puts out a smell when running. I can’t remember if that is an expected by product of the brushes or a sign that something is wrong.

I doubt this tool will stand up to any commercial use but I think it will be a great tool for the average home owner or hobbyist as long as the batteries last. If you are on a budget this could be a fantastic option for you as there are many other tools head you can buy and use with this drill.
