This is a really good camera for the price. I use it professionally to do real estate photography as well as studio head shots. Yes I know this is an entry level camera, but if you work in controlled environments this camera can do great. But if you are doing event photography this camera probably isn’t going to be your best bet. There are other Canon cameras with faster focusing, way better ISO and weather sealing that are awesome for weddings, sports ect.

This camera works very similar to my previous camera the Canon Rebel t3i. I didn’t really notice a difference in resolution even though my last camera was 18MP and this is 24MP. The only difference to me was the wifi and touch screen.

    Wifi: 2/5
I love that they included wifi on this camera, it allows you to see what the camera is seeing in live view, change camera settings and even view photos you just took. But if you are using your phone to control the camera, your camera goes black and you cannot use the view finder, the screen or any of the controls on the camera, only the phone. In order to go back to using your camera you have to un pair your phone. In order to use your phone again you have to re enable wifi on your camera and re pair the camera and phone. This can get really annoying. I wish this worked like a few other cameras I have used that allow you to use your phone and the camera at the same time with out un pairing and re pairing. Because if I walk away from my camera I want to be able to control it with my phone, but if I walk back to it I want to be able to use the cameras screen and controls.
Secondly the app could be a lot more intuitive than it is. But over all I am glad this camera has the feature and I have used it a few times.

    Touch screen: 4/5
I don’t use touch screen but I tried it out and it works well. The nice thing is you can lock the touch screen so that it doesn’t work by touch. That way you don’t accidentally bump things.

    Image quality: 4/5
For this price point you can get pretty dang good pictures if you know what you are doing, have good light and a good lens.

    Video Quality: 2/5
I really love canon cameras and several years back I was very impressed with their video capability. But other than the 5D Mark IIII, the video has not improved over the years. It is only HD, and with that being said it is very compressed low bit rate HD so its not even very good HD. I use a Panasonic G7 to get high bit rate 4K video that looks pretty dang good compared to the video on this canon.

Continous auto focus in video mode:
I am really glad they included this and it works pretty well. I am not able to comment on it much because I normally use manual focus. But there have been a few times I had shots moving focus points and it was nice being able to use the continuous auto focus in video mode it has.

I attached a few example images I took with this camera.

i bought this for school last September and used it a lot for classes over the last year, i hate the auto focus and disabled it permanently within a month of getting it if your doing any video i would suggest you do the same. i would have liked an xlr mic input but thats unrealistic in this price range though other wise i found the camera simple and intuitive to use. when i have done pictures they’ve been very nice with tons of detail though it did seem to struggle a bit when i did really low light concert photography though that could easily have been me. mine has pretty much lived in Manuel mode since i got it and i feel like the options afford you a lot of freedom with your shots.

This is a fantastic camera. I highly recommended it for anyone interested in photography. Just remember this has a crop sensor. When you buy a lense. The lens will not be true size. Youโ€™ll have to multiply 1.6(crop sensor) x lens size = real size. For instance 1.6 x 50mm lens = 80mm. This is really not a big deal. Just step back from your subject. Only on a full frame sensor camera will you get true lens sizes. And they will be twice the price if not more

I was fortunate to purchase this through Amazon (I think it is interesting that mostly it is only available through third party vendors on the marketplace), as I decided to return it because I just wasn’t satisfied. I did not have the spots on the sensor that have been noted, but I found the shutter noisy (compared to a t2i), and I was disturbed by the fact that the video control is now part of the on/off switch. There were some other minor changes to control buttons from earlier rebels to accommodate the fully articulating viewfinder, but the video control is the only problematic one for me. While I like the new viewfinder, I was surprised that the touchscreen still requires use of the control wheel for some functions. The main reason I returned the unit is that the image quality just did not seem to warrant the upgrade from my current 18.1 mp rebel. I enjoy wildlife photography, especially of birds, and so crop a fair amount and I was excited to see what the additional pixels and autofocus points of the t6i mean for improved image quality. In direct comparisons there was minimal difference, though I will acknowledge that color was a bit more vibrant on the new t6i. I did not use the wifi function (but I use the eyefi mobi card in my t2i, so don’t really need this function), or the video to can’t speak to how well these work. If you are new to the Canon rebel line, this is probably a worthy entry level camera. If you already have an earlier version, especially the newer t5i, you’ll have to decide if the added pixels is worth the upgrade. It wasn’t for me, though I may rent the t6s version and see if more time with the camera makes me like it more.

Update 6/25/15 – I have spent another two weeks with the camera (I rented it), and have upgraded my review with an additional star. I’m not sure my original review indicated strongly enough that this is a great camera if you don’t already have a good dslr. And I believe that the upgrades to this camera over older rebels might make it worth the upgrade if you do a lot of video or low light photography. The advantages of the t6i for low light shooting was brought to my attention by the comment from Willie, and so I tested it out. My t2i, at 18 mp, does hunt more in low light and the image is slightly darker (you can see the difference in the photos I’ve uploaded). However, since most of my use with the camera is in natural light I still do not plan to upgrade. The articulating touchscreen LCD is nice, and balanced out some of the less desirable changes to the controls, but isn’t enough to make the change. In fact, the fun thing about testing my old camera against the latest rebel is confirming that Canon does make great cameras that should last a long time. I understand that there will be a SL2 in the fall, and I’ll see what that has to offer.

Update 7/6/15: I did end up upgrading, but not to the t6i. Found a great deal on the marketplace for a used t4i, and grabbed it. I realized that turning on the video on the on/off switch has been around since the t4i, so really not such a big deal on the t6i. I will say now that I have an articulating, touchscreen lcd that it is a nice upgrade to have, especially if you use liveview much. Getting the t4i instead of the t6i meant I was able to get a new lens, and that will probably make the most difference for my photos.

I love this camera, it was shipped fast and everything about the actual device is in full working order.

I will say this about the T6i though…

It does 60fps in 720P, and 30fps in 1080P. So if you’re using it for some Youtube vlogging, it’ll do the trick. If you can squeeze the extra cash though, get the 70D or 80D. Yes more expensive, but the lens is what costs the most, not the body. As a beginner I was learning this, and now looking back on things I very likely would have just bought the 80D. Once you buy tripods, accessories, batteries, mic, etc, you’ll be at that pricepoint anyway.
