JDL Reviews –
The Canon G4280 printer covers nearly all my checkboxes for a home printer. I do some consulting from home and my family has many needs for its capabilities too.
Summary of benefits:
– For all its capabilities (Print, Scan, Copy), it has a nice small footprint. My current laser printer that does basically all the same functions is twice as large.
– No more print cartridges! It uses the larger refills which will save lots of money on ink replacement. With these bottles, the amount of print is high with 6,000 to 7,700 pages depending on black or color. There are actually windows at the front to see the actual ink level of each tank.
– Print resolution can go as high as 4800 x 1200 DPI for fine image presentations.
– Reasonably fast print speed of 11 pgs/min B&W or 6 pgs/min color.
– Double sided printing and scanning (a huge plus for me)
– A compact automatic document feeder that can hold 35 sheets.
– It uses letter size paper in a 100 sheet capacity tray at the rear. It says it can handle legal sized paper (11×14″) but I did not try that.
– Print quality on paper is very good.
– Photos can be printed to 4×6″ and are excellent imaging.
– A 2.7″ easy to use touchscreen panel that flips up to see it easily.
– Multiple connections such as WiFi, Ethernet, USB. It includes WiFi direct to the printer too. I found it easy to setup and print out my files from both my laptop and from my cell phone.
I don’t really have any negatives just yet. Overall, I am very pleased with this printer so far and it looks good in my home office.

If you have an older inkjet printer that uses ink cartridges, then save LOTS of money and buy this instead! Cartridges cost so much money for such a small amount of ink (and not that many pages printed). With this printer which uses the Mega Tank system, you buy the ink in bottles and fill up the printer tanks (in a mistake proof way as each color bottle only fits in its assigned slot). No more trying to fill up an ink cartridge with messy inks or going out and buying ink cartridges which mess with your wallet. There are windows that show the ink levels in the printer. You’re supposed to wait to fill the printer until the ink levels are below the bottom indicator. I don’t know what would happen if you use one color ink far more than the others. I’d look that up in the manual, but there isn’t a manual that’s easy to access (see below)
In any case, the set up of this printer was a breeze. My granddaughter helped me set this up, from unboxing to filling up the ink reservoirs. She loved it! I did it all from the color LED screen right on the printer (that screen is also good for doing practically everything else on the printer). When it was time to go online and download the software, it gave me the correct address to use. Online helps were easy to access, too. I set it up to use my WiFi to connect to my computer, but I could have used a USB printer cable as well. Oddly, the setup asked me if I wanted to connect using an ethernet cable, but there is no ethernet port on the printer that I can find (I think I saw that option, but…). The power is supplied to the printer by a standard double-lobed power cord (the kind that you can’t put in the wrong way as there is no wrong way). I’m glad of that because I can get another of those cords inexpensively rather than buying a power brick if I somehow misplace that (if I ever move, count on me losing it!).
I am disappointed that I don’t seem able to download a manual for the printer. I can go online and travel to the Canon US website, type in my product name and search for the issue I’m having a question about. It would be so much easier if I could just have a PDF of the whole manual (diagrams and all, hopefully) stored on my computer. Perhaps there is, but I haven’t found it yet. If I find out that I can get one, I’ll update this.
Now, about the print quality.…It’s amazing! I have an old (very old) HP laser printer that can print up to 600 dpi. This is about 16 times better! You can tell when looking at it. The speed of print for B&W is just a touch slower than the laser printer as well, but my standard is the old HP Deskjet 500 (slow!). They might have skimped some on the scanner resolution, but 600x 1200 is more than enough for me. If I need more I can take a picture of something with my camera and transfer it to the computer editing software. I can print from my Android phone (iOS too if I had one), my Windows 11 computer and my wife’s laptop. Great!
Canon offers a nice perk in that they provide free software than you can use to create posters and banners. Yes! Banners! The printer accepts continuous banner paper so you can just print out a long banner. No more trimming and taping banners together.
I’m very pleased with the double-sided printing. This printer does it with no trouble at all, and the paper hasn’t jammed on me yet. I like printing things double-sided as it saves on paper and space. Another way this printer saves you money. The out tray of the printer has an upward slope to it. That keeps your printouts from scattering on the floor when you’re printing a dozen pages at a time (which then saves you time by not having to try and get all your pages back into the correct order). There is only the tilted paper tray at the back of the printer to feed paper into the printer. I guess that’s a way of uncomplicating things by not having paper trays, but they would have been nice. There’s not really room given the size of the printer to have a legal sized paper tray, but if you’re printing from legal paper the paper will be sagging over the back of the paper holder. But that doesn’t make me want to send this printer back! There is an access port on the back of the printer in case your paper jams and you need to clean it out.
I’m very pleased with this printer. I’ve mentioned some things I don’t like, but that’s mostly for completely this review and to give you a bit more information. As I’ve already said, I’m very pleased with this. For the initial price, it’s a good deal. Considering that it uses ink tanks instead of cartridges, this is a great deal!

Very versatile, and very useful Canon print device. There are many things that I like about this print device, from the Mega tanks, to the compact versatility of the device. I do a fair amount of printing so I have a tendency to use quite a bit of ink. This has four different tanks to fill, three colors and one black, and it has two print heads to print what ever we need to print. The ink lasts for quite some time and when it comes time to replace will not break the bank. The print speed is great, my device sits behind me, I select print for about 8 pages, double sided, by the time I turn around the device has completed it’s print job. No more having to get a cup of coffee, using the restroom and coming back to find it is just about done printing the last page. Scan is quick, copy is just a quick, and set up is so smooth and easy, it was so easy I have my smartphone set up to print, by tablet set up to print, my computers set up to print. Online registration and support is great, easy to find and navigate, if you are expecting pages and pages of document to come in the box, there is a quick setup guide that will get you started, if you need more details, you can easily find it on line. Highly recommended.
