Char-Broil 1-Burner Portable Propane Grill – 17402049 Description
- GAS GRILL: Powered by liquid propane gas, this grill runs on a 1-pound propane gas tank, not included. It reaches cooking temperatures quickly, delivers high temps and maintains even heat.
- COOKING AREA: Grill up to 10 burgers, 4 chicken breasts or 14 brats on a 240-square-inch grate.
- BTU RATING: This grill has a 9,500 BTU rating. *BTU is a measurement of energy used by your grill and is not related to how hot it will get. Grills with lower BTUs burn less fuel to cook your food.
- GRATES: These wire grates are porcelain-coated to resist rust and make them easier to clean. They’re lightweight, retain heat to cook food evenly and leave impressive grill marks.
- TEMP GAUGE: The lid-mounted temperature gauge displays accurate temps, so you always know the cooking temperature inside your grill.
- IGNITION: The Piezo igniter creates a spark at the burner that lights the grill when you press the button and turn the control knob.
- CONTROL KNOB: The control knob powers the grill on & off and adjusts cooking temperatures. Turn clockwise to increase the heat and counterclockwise to decrease.
- GREASE TRAY: A removable grease tray catches oil drippings and slides out for easy cleaning.
- ASSEMBLY: Minimal assembly is required. Step-by-step instructions are included in the Assembly Guide.
- WARRANTY: 1-year grates, lid, firebox and other parts

As a lifelong (I’m 66 years young) camper, I have purchased many tabletop grilles over the years. This is by far the best one ever!! Plenty of heat to handle everything I put on it. I purchased an adapter hose to connect it to a bulk tank for home use but also use it with a portable tank when we take it on a picnic. This grill stores easily which makes it perfect for our condo where we don’t have room for a larger grill. I saw complaints about the way the control valve attaches to the unit. It is by design, what may appear to be loose. This provides for the valve to move to accommodate whatever type of fuel source you choose to connect to it. It DOES NOT come anywhere near coming apart unexpectedly. This grill has excellent construction and sits firmly on the surface of your choosing. It assembles in minutes with minimal tools required. The cast aluminum shell far exceeds any sheet metal shell that warps and twists with normal use. I recommend this product to anyone that is looking for a great tabletop grill.

Great Grill for the price.

It needs to slow burner down more for not so hot cooking.

I just got back from 11 days on Lake Erie for the CMP National Match. I took this grill in addition to a flat top to cook for our group of 5. For the price, this thing is hard to beat. I used it daily for hot dogs, brats, carne asada, Italian Sausage and more. On match days, we even took it to the range to cook lunch in the parking lot. As noted, the cooking surface isn’t as even as a multi-burner grill. Keeping an eye on your food and moving things around as necessary solves that problem. It was actually helpful to be able to move food to the edges to keep it warm.
Ease of assembly will depend on your abilities. I’m mechanical, so putting it together took much less than 15 minutes. All parts were in the box. A screw driver is required. I knew to be aware of the loose fitting for the regulator. It truly is designed to be that way so don’t get any wise ideas with washers, etc. This is a safe design and altering it will affect performance and safety.
I just finished cleaning it. The enameled burner cover cleaned up with dish soap and a sponge. I got the loose bits off of the enameled grate and threw it in the dishwasher. The inside floor of the grill cleaned up nicely with degreaser and a garden hose. The grease cup also cleaned up easily with some dish washing detergent and a sponge. After it dries, I’ll pack it up for the next adventure.
The only issue I ran into was the piezo igniter. It is wired per the instructions and I see a spark but I was never able to successfully light the stove with it. I never go camping without a lighter so it wasn’t a huge deal and we didn’t have to eat raw meat. I would have gotten the stove without the igniter but, having it, I did expect it to work. I’ll tinker with it before the next outing.
I would recommend this grill. I’m sure there are better ones out there but I didn’t find any at this price. I’ve had other one burner compact grills and this one is the best of the lot. I’d buy it again.

Good Little BBQ!
Grill gets very hot (500-625° with lid closed) & food is close to the flame so you have to move things around a lot so you don’t burn them (i.e. with longer-cooking foods like potatos).
With a little fine adjustment i was able to turn down the flame pretty low without it going out. Other reviews said it could use a wider flame shield & i agree. I suggest if it were wider AND had holes in half of it (like along one long side) you could move food to a cooler area to cook slower.
As it is out of the box, the coolest spot is directly over the heat shield. Around the sides of the grill get hot! Have an oven mitt handy & a Phillips head screwdriver so you can re-tighten the front plastic handle screws after your first hot cooking session.
This is a Great Grill for steaks & burgers though! I will definitely take it camping!
FYI: Underneath the bbq unit gets quite hot so make sure it’s not on a delicate surface, etc, as it could possibly melt/damage a plastic table or rubberized tablecloth. I put a couple of big ceramic floor tiles under mine & it makes a great spot to keep your food warm wrapped in foil.
I hooked mine up to a larger 5 gallon tank with an adapter hose i got off Amazon. Works great! For camping I’d probably just bring a few of the small propane bottles.
Grill was pretty straighforward & simple to put together (45 min-1 hr), but i am good with mechanical assembly of things like this.
The regulator Does turn freely once “locked” in place. It is a loose fit, but it does not affect the performance or flame. It’s very easy to turn & remove it for transport. (You can also leave it still attached to the small bottle or tank hose. Just make sure gas is shut off or else disconnect bottle/tank completely if you smell any gas).
Overall, I am Very happy with this little grill. It will be nice to have for portable summer grilling!
