I admit that I was skeptical when the mallet arrived. It’s so lightweight, I didn’t think it would be terribly useful, but I was wrong. It works like a champ to pound in ground stakes, and the slots in the handle worked beautifully to get them back up out of the ground. As for being lightweight? A total plus. Who needs more heavy gear to lug around, right?

This rather small, lightweight plastic tent stake mallet by Coleman is just the right size to either stuff into or hang onto your backpack. Although small in size, the plastic mallet delivers a potent punch strong enough to get tent stakes through most ground conditions. This petite plastic tent stake mallet is perfect for backpacking as its small size and lightweight factors are clearly superior to larger and heavier tent stake mallets such as the Coghlan’s/Texsport Plastic Tent Stake Mallet, or even worse, the Coleman/Coghlan’s Rubber Tent Stake Mallet with Hook.
Although some of my fellow backpackers skip any tent stake mallet and use only a rock to pound in their backpacking tent stakes, I always bring my Coleman Plastic Tent Stake Mallet on backpacking/camping trips as it has many versatile uses such as a tent stake mallet, a pounding and prying tool; and if needed, as a nonlethal weapon for protection.

I was a bit skeptical of using a plastic hammer to pound stakes into the ground. When it arrived, I was even more skeptical, as the thing barely has any mass at all. I think the packaging weighs more than the mallet.
But it’s made of either really good ABS or poly-carb, and it darned sure won’t break, and if you swing it with any force at all, it will make an impact. Physics says F=MA. This mallet doesn’t deliver much “M”, but it’s so lightweight and stiff, you can certainly put some “A” behind it. You would not want to be whacked in the head with it.
I used it this weekend to drive six thick stakes into pretty unforgiving ground, and while a heavy mallet would’ve driven them faster, the Coleman mallet did the job, albeit with a few extra whacks. That’s worth the weight savings. You want to avoid choking up on the handle so you can maximize swing velocity (but no so much (obviously) that you lack fine control and end up whacking your hand instead).
It’s non-intuitive exactly how the handle was meant to be a stake puller. There are a few ways to work the end of a stake into the handle and exert force, and I’m not sure if Coleman had any specific method in mind. At any rate, it works well as a stake puller.
This is also excellent to add to a automobile emergency kit.

I love this thing! Camping is my favorite activity. I just keep this thing in one of the storage compartments in my car. It is amazing how many times it has come in handy. Just the other day, I used it to help get a tire off the lug nuts. Obviously, since it’s plastic, it isn’t as strong as a hammer, but I’ll tell you what, it is way stronger than I expected for a plastic hammer. Coleman always surprises me with their quality. That is the case with this product. I couldn’t be more happy with this purchase. I rarely give 5 star ratings and, as you can see, I gave this a 5 star rating.

Very robust poly mallet to drive pegs and stakes. Provides the proper leverage and size to pound small and large tent pegs with minimal effort. If you opt to pound in metal pegs you may want to place something in between the stake head and mallet head to prevent the mallet surface from being damaged. It will also dampen the plastic “pinging” you get from a poly hammer head contacting another hard surface. Your primary concern should be with ability to easily drive the peg into the ground and not so much making direct contact with stake head and mallet head.

This is a good mallet especially for feeling very light & cheap. My only gripe is that I wish the head was a little bit weightier… I use it for camping… and on rocky terrain I’d have to give more whacks to drive in a tent stake than what I’d care for so added weight would be appreciated. Perfect for med. compacted soil.

It is a plastic mallet, indeed. It’s pretty light — good for backpacking, I suppose — but a bit too light to really whack those tent stakes into the ground. You have to use a lot of strength to make up for its lack of heft. If you’re camping next to your car, I’d bring a heavier hammer (I will next time).
