This book is the story of an abandoned cottage that was made over into an enchanted French cottage by the author and her husband. It has page after page of beautiful photographs showing the finished rooms in her cottage as well as sections of the book dedicated to outdoor living spaces and outbuildings. The story was inspiring, as you see how they transformed this dilapidated place into a home that has luxurious elements (marble bathrooms, a French Lacanche kitchen range, chandeliers, etc) all incorporated within the original wooden cottage walls. I loved seeing how a humble home space could be elevated with the decorating choices the author made to give it a sense of luxury and fine living.
The outdoor spaces are truly marvelous as well, with many intimate defined spaces to include an English style sitting area around a classical lion fountain on a wall of ivy, a stone fireplace made by the author and her husband that is the focal point of an enchanted pergola, another stone fireplace and sitting area, an outdoor greenhouse that is used as a getaway spot, and there is even an extra little cottage that has the sweetest old fashioned kitchen and spaces (also made over in the French cottage style). Lovers of French, Rustic, Cottage, Farmhouse, and Shabby Chic decor will all find much to love in this book. I find it very similar in style and quality to the series of books written by Brooke Giannetti on her California living spaces, Patina Style and Patina Farm.
I am also a life long interior designer and found this book to be very well written, as it is the author’s story and how she transformed this dreary abandoned little structure into one filled with the rustic luxe look that is known as the French Country Cottage, not a how to manual on decorating. I really LOVED this book and highly recommend it!

Once again, I want to mention that Courtney has done a fabulous job with this book — and all the other books she has written. The pictures are gorgeous and she writes so well. She is so talented! You will enjoy reading this book and looking at all the pictures. We have all of her books on our coffee table. Guests like to pick up a book and look at it and comment on what a lovely book it is. A gorgeous book, easy to read and inspiring. I enjoy reading each chapter. The book is well organized from the front yard to the back, kitchen to bedroom, and to the cottage divided into separate chapters. Recommended for those who love French influence on home decorations. Thank you!

This is a book to be enjoyed for its beauty, and for the enthusiasm exuded through its text. It is delightfully written, as Courtney takes you through the key moments of her childhood where her love of flowers, the imperfections found in time-worn objects, and dream-inspiring home interiors (and secret gardens) were born. She also speaks lovingly about the cottage home she and her husband purchased in California while their children were still young, and how they put their mark on it over time and how it came to be so much more than a home.
And all the while, on every page, those swoon-worthy photographs that I look forward to on her blog. And I think that’s what I love most about this book – I do enjoy the blog, but it is so hard to get lost in it because like any blog, you have to keep clicking from post to post and it just breaks up the experience into small chunks. But the book – oh the book is one to simply page through slowly, like taking a tour through the house and taking note of all the beautiful details, while understanding at last how it all fits together.
I can’t think of any other home style book quite like French Country Cottage – for the reader it is an experience to savor. And for the author, truly a labor of love and a long-held dream come true!
