Crane Hippo Ultrasonic Humidifier, 1 Gallon Cool Mist

This is one of the most reliable and effective humidifiers I’ve had. It runs and runs without water droplets collecting where it comes out. The reservoir is wobbly to carry when I fill it (I think because it’s sphere-like) but manageable. Plus, the mist comes out of the ears. I chuckle each time I start it up. A+

I have very mixed feelings about this humidifier.

Pros:

It gives out a noticeable amount of humidity, and I can see the noticeable rise in humidity levels when I use it – so it gives me the primary benefit one expects from a humidifier

It is very quiet

It is cute

Its capacity is pretty good

Cons:

It is an awkward shape

It is difficult to clean thoroughly – I don’t worry about the cleanliness of the humidity produced, because it’s ultrasonic. But when I run it for a few days, or want to put it away into storage in the spring, it is challenging to clean out the base. And the water tank wouldn’t significantly be cleaned by being put in the dishwasher – there’s a small opening in the bottom. You have to fill it with water, add bleach, and let it sit a while to clean the canister. I’m not confident about how clean I can get the base. I don’t want mold growing in there!

My main area of dissatisfaction: You take the tank, hold it upside down to fill it with water, put the cap on and turn it right-side up. The tank is now heavy with water, and wet from being held under the spout. Which means I dropped it within 2 days of opening it – and the plastic tank shattered and big pieces broke off, rendering the humidifier unusable. I ordered another (unbreakable tank) humidifier, then checked the Crane website and found I could order a new tank — that came quickly and I’m now using this humidifier again. But it’s only a matter of time before I drop the slippery, heavy tank again. I moved it from the room for which I originally purchased (which has hardwood floors) to my bedroom (which has carpeting. I am being extra careful).

Summary: I actually really like this humidifier. It does what I need – it provides enough humidity on dry days and is quiet. I can run it overnight on a tank of water so the capacity and output are good. But: I am concerned with how easy it was to shatter the tank, and I’m only willing to buy so many replacement tanks

I ordered this for 20 month old foster twins we were recently placed with. The hippo is so cute!!! I was originally looking for a blue whale because that’s the theme we’re going with in the boy’s room, but the hippo is blue and it goes perfectly!
The humidifier leaked from the bottom the first night we used it, BUT I realized it’s because I had filled the top with water and them placed it back on the base AND THEN I moved it. I tipped it too much and water got into the bottom where it shouldn’t have. Once I emptied it out the next day and re-filled and didn’t move it, it hasn’t leaked since. So the first time was a user error!
I make sure it’s filled with filtered water all the way to the top every night and it lasts through the night with about an inch of water still left in the tank the next morning. We only turn it on about half way and that produces plenty of humidity in the room for the little ones.
The hippo head comes off for easy cleaning, the tank comes off, and the base stays intact. Overall, easy to keep clean and keep from getting moldy. Just follow instructions!
I would definitely buy again!

This humidifier is so cute! It’s quiet, and works great. If you read the instructions it tells you how to use it properly. I’ve slept perfect since having it. I like that you can adjust the amount of steam and that it doesn’t give out on me. Make sure not to leave it on when you aren’t around and fill it up before leaving it in for a while. I’m so happy with this product!
