Exo Terra Riverbed Sand, 10-Pounds – No Dyes Description

  • Natural Sand: Riverbed Sand is ideal for many types of aquatic turtles as it is their preferred substrate in the wild. Soft-shell turtles especially prefer the fine sand for digging and burrowing. No added dyes or chemicals.
  • Ideal Grain Size: The riverbed sand is very fine and can be easily secreted when ingested, unlike gravel or pebbles which can cause indigestion.
  • Other Uses: Other types of water and ground-dwelling reptiles, such as frogs and salamanders, will also benefit from Riverbed Sand because of its soft nature. A rough surface, such as gravel, can easily injure skin tissue.
  • Sand Usefulness: The sand serves as an excellent substrate for river or aquatic reptiles and turtles, helping them stimulate natural behavior.
  • Size: Available in a 10-pound plastic bag.

I’m not sure if I read the reviews and I usually do before I purchase something but I saw the bag and the price so I purchased it. ( thinking it was a great price for what I need for a new soft shell turtle)
Well I read we should always clean the sand and I’m doing that but even though I keep rising the sand over and over I can’t get rid of the color that the water keeps drawing from the same and the foggy-ness is the water and Ive only rents about 2 cups or a little over and I gave up using the water I have for our turtle tank.
To save money I’m using tap water, leaving it out for 3 days or longer but I’ve stopped trying to clean the sand with the water and started rising the almost 3 cups of sand with tap water. I still can’t get the murky color out.
Not sure when or if it will be ok to put the sand in the tank.
Should I keep the turtle out the tank for sand and water to settle?
Will I need to let the sand and water settle for the water to become clear?
    Will it clear up?
My filter won’t be here in a few days but I hope the water settles so it doesn’t wear out my new filter?
I read this sand is clean without chemicals & etc. Not harmful for the animals it’s intended to use for but more info ( directions ) on the bag would be helpful!
I would like to know how many times to rinse the sand or to know about when to indicate when it’s OK to add the sand into the tank!
The price was great compared to pet stores but after I finished writing this I’m going to read and review the listing on here because if I don’t find any information I need now than it’s probably best buying the sand from a pet store even if the cost is higher.
Again I’m not sure but if I have to rinse off the sand 20x to achieve the water to look clear than it’s best to buy an more expensive sand so you won’t have.
I did not realize the color of the sand too. The sand seems great for non aquatic animals.

I love the color, love the texture but between me and my husband we washed it 10x and that’s not exaggerating the times we had to wash and it’s still slightly foggy water. Im sure with 2-3 more rinses it could have been clear but we were exhausted. My turtle is extremely happy with digging/playing in the sand.

I had rinsed it in a bucket a few times and then put it in my tank – big mistake! It was a mess. So I removed the sand and put it into a satin pillowcase and did it that way about 4-5x until the water was mostly clear. Then I put it back into the tank and filled it up again. Success! It was a tad cloudy but settled by the new day and was settled, the sand does kick up. It becomes sort of muddy in consistency.

Extremely soft sand I got one bag and it was enough to cover the bottom of my 55 gal tank. Worth the price for the safety of my axie. Love the color also

This sand is perfect for axolotls. It is very fine and settles in the water very smooth. It’s not the easiest to clean before you use it but it’s worth it

When I first received the bag I followed what other reviews stated and washed the sand in an old pillow case until the water ran clear-ish (around 30 mins). I added it to my tank, used a syphon to fill it with water gently and let it sit for about 1 day. Then added my filter in + moss balls and a carbon fiber filter, after a day at work the sand seemed to have settled a bit but was still a bit cloudy. Now it’s been a week and a white film has developed around the tank, on decor, and even on my turtle. My BRAND NEW filter was also clogged with sand. I’ve done 3 full water changes and ITS STILL CLOUDY. I really liked the redish color of the sand and was planning on buying more, however I am greatly dissatisfied with the impurities in the sand.

I love this sand. It’s a little pricy, but I decided it was worth it since I wanted a darker color for my aquarium. It took quite a while to wash, but it was worth it. I used a pillow case to wash mine, which worked perfectly! Just make sure to rinse it well until it runs mostly clear. The cloudiness in my picture is from adding fritz- the sand settled very quickly!
I put it in my axolotl tank since it’s super fine and safe for them. My little guy seems to like walking on it so far. 🙂 I’m very happy I went with this sand!

It makes the water all dark. Water is cloudy now. Not sand. It’s plain dirt. Not worth price needed for aquarium soft turtle. Otherwise would have returned
