    Fluval G6 Advanced Filtration System

Purchased the Fluvial G6 for a Cichlid 54 Gallon Corner Aquarium…
    I absolutely love it:

    *Great water flow
    *Completely silent
*Super easy Mechanical and Chemical filtration clean/replacement
*Temperature, Conductivity, and flow feedback are a huge bonus
*Tons of biological filtration capacity with (3) trays
    *Small footprint
    *Work of art aesthetically

I almost didn’t purchase this filter due to some of the negative comments…..
But sure glad I did, I’ve had zero issues and it works flawlessly.

Running a packed chemical cartridge of very fine grained Purigen and still have no low flow issues at all.
    Very happy with this filter.

    *****Update after 6-months******
Rating dropped from 5-Stars to 1-Star
Water flow dropped dramatically after about 6-months and Fluval was zero help in getting a resolution, other than trying to blame it on stupid things with my setup….none of which was an issue.
I was lucky as I complained to Amazon and believe it or not, after 6-months they accepted a return.

I still like the looks and many features of this filter but it seems that there are issues after it has ran for a period of time that Fluval refuses to acknowledge. They will drag on with warranty claims then, maybe, finally except a return if you pay for shipping and they will diagnose the filter for many weeks before deciding what to do.

My guess is….I suspect that Fluval is keeping this on the market only to sell off excessive inventory. I highly doubt they are continue to manufacturer this filter that seems plagued with many issues and very finicky to operate successfully.
It was originally released way back in 2010

I’ve been in he hobby for 25 years keeping mostly Discus and African Chiclids. I’ve always strived to maintian the highest standards in water quatlity for my fish. Including wet/dry, UV, and many combinations and brands of canister filters. The reality is that you can set up any filter combo and bio/chem product but at the end of the day how well you maintian your filter materials is the biggest indicator of your success. This is the best by far upside to the G6. It is as east and less messy than a typical hand on side filter. Takes 10 minutes tops. I also love to be able to switch out chem with ease. I have very high concentrations of nitrates in my top water about 20 to 30 ppm so I have been switching from the provided tri-EX to Seachem Purigen. The tri-EX has brought down the nitrates to about 5 ppm. I have yet to try the 100% nitrate but expect even more impressive results.
I have a 100 gallon tank that is planted and has 6 adult discus, 9 rams, and 15 tetras (serpaem black neon and cardinal). I also use a large UV, though the G6 has baout half the turnover as previous filter the water parameters are much better. I used the provided g nodes but have matrix in top tray of bio space.
I have only had the filter for 2 months but will update if anything changes with my expereince.
The only downside is the waterflow indicator ALWAYS shows low flow since my first maintance which is odd becuase the filter was pretty dirty after two weeks so if all you do is spray and scrub with provided brush how could it be worse than before the maintence which did not indicate low flow? It would be nice to have an actually idication of flow, gph or something, rather than the general percentages. I’m not sure if its becuase my intake hose is a couple feet longer (thinking becuase it is gravity iot would not affect flow just add extra pressure) or if my bio trays or too heavely stocked.
Anyways I choose to ignore and enjoy the great results so far.

This is a review after owning and maintaining this filter over a period of a year. The quality and engineering on this filter is very good. You are paying for what you get, that’s for sure. If you keep feeding and waste to a minimum within the tank and clean the pre-filter on a regular basis, the filter will do well.

Problems that I’ve run into with the filter: the priming pump broke and for some reason no longer primes the intake water line going to the filter. The only way to prime the filter now is to take an underwater powerhead in my tank and shoot water into the intake pipe. That ends up pumping any air out of the filter/hoses and restoring water flow. The twist-in cartridges become difficult over time to twist out and remnove. This is solved somewhat by lubing the red o-rings on the pre-filter and chem cartridges with petroleum jelly. I’ve run into problems with brown algae growing in the included hoses, which clogs the hoses over time and greatly reduces the flow rate of the filter (easily noticeable from the output of the spraybars). The hoses, however, are easily cleaned out with long flexible steel wire brushes. If you notice high levels of algae growing in the filter/hoses, reduce feeding in your tank. I broke the original impeller, which pumps water into/out of the filter. You have to be very delicate when pulling the impeller out of the filter’s headunit; use that hooked metal tool that comes with the filter. The impeller’s spindle is made out of some very fragile plastic (or is it ceramic?) that easily snapped on me when i lazily tried prying it out from the filter’s headunit with a knife. The blue pre-filter cartridges for this filter clog very, very quickly (they are made of a high mesh sieve and are easily renewable and reusable), and shouldn’t be depended upon for prefiltering aquarium water for extremely dirty animals like red-eared slider turtles. The regular white-prefilters are claimed to be of a “no pass through” design, but if you look closely at the filter floss on these cartridges, you will notice holes in the filter strands where waste from your aquarium can slip through. The waste then ends up on the biological media, slowly creating a sludge on top of all bio media trays over time, further reducing the flow rate of the filter. This problem can likely be solved by adding a sponge filter of some sort to the suction end of the intake pipe.

Complete cleaning this filter is a hell of a chore–I feel that completely cleaning this filter is on par with washing a car. With that said, I would not recommend using this filter for aquatic turtles, unless you feed the turtles in a separate tank. I use this filter for a red eared and yellow bellied slider, and I feed my turtles in a separate tank just for the sake of reducing overall maintenance of the filter.

Other than all that, I would recommend this filter overall for its high level of engineering and ease of maintenance (outside of cleaning it completely). For turtles, however, I would recommend getting something like a wet dry filter or a refugium type filter. Anything that’s easy to clean–something that this filter is not, by any means.

I have owned a lot of filters in my lifetime but this one beats all the others by a mile. After installing (which was a breeze) I noticed that my water started to clear as never before in as little as 12hrs. The LCD display is very nice and tells you when to change the media. The only thing I would suggest is getting some extra G-nodes, it has three big baskets to fill but it comes with not enough to fill them up. Shipping was super fast and received it in 5 days to Calgary.

Excelente filtro, silencioso, tanto que estando incluso afuera del mueble a veces tengo que ir a ver si está prendido. no le dio 4 estrellas por que hubiera preferido en vez de un medidor de conductividad el filtro trajera un filtro UV
