These are known to fail in these old atv. To test yours just take it off and bake it in the oven. Then reinstall and the atv will likely run. It will fail again eventually but at least you will know that the cdi is the problem.

My 1988 TRX300 wouldn’t start, no spark. The CDI was already changed a couple years ago and apparently failed again.
With this CDI in the system, the coil made a fat healthy blue spark that jumped over . 25 inch or 7+mm with a solid audible POP. Before, nothing.
It definitely fixed the no-spark problem and the machine starts and runs great now.
Testing: Rumor has it you can troubleshoot the old CDI by baking it at 250-300F in an oven for 10-15 minutes. If it works hot but fails as it cools down, the issue is a bad CDI. Nothing changed with my old CDI when I tried this test, but allegedly this technique has pinpointed the problem for lots of other people on the interwebz.
