I’ve been shooting air guns since I was a kid, and am now in my 30’s. Had a Gamo Big Cat 1200, .177 caliber that I bought in ’08 and sold a few years later. At the time, that was the most powerful air rifle I’d ever owned. It had laser accuracy at close backyard ranges, and suited my needs for pest control and indoor garage target shooting quite nicely. I’ve regretted selling it, and wanted to buy another Gamo for a while.
This time, I decided to go for the bigger caliber, and got this Gamo Wildcat Whisper .22. This is my first ever .22. I set up a heavy 6 or 7 inch thick piece of a wood beam, multiple layers of cardboard, and multiple layers of old phone books, and proceeded to go about getting the scope zeroed.
The first 3 or 4 shots were VERY loud, definitely louder than my Sig Sauer MCX .177. But after about another 4 or 5 shots it settled down and got noticeably quieter, still kind of louder than I expected but tolerable, like a loud nail gun or something.
The quality that I remember from my first Gamo is all here, I was happy to see. Scope is basic but crisp and clear, and works fine for me.
Trigger is nice and smooth.
Shooting Crow Magnum .22 hollow points from close range, I was putting multiple pellets through the same holes, with tight groups. I have a somewhat wide, but not very long? Backyard in a semi-forested suburban neighborhood, and usually zero my scopes for the range I shoot squirrels and other pests from my back porch, about 25-30 feet. For longer range accuracy with this, I don’t know yet. But from these distances I can get near-surgical accuracy with this!
It packs a wallop, blasting holes over 200 pages into a phone book, average. This thing has hefty power compared to a .177 break-barrel!
This is a weapon, nothing like the M-16 and M-249 SAW from my Army days, but a weapon and serious rifle nonetheless! I wish my Dad was alive to see this gun…airguns have changed so much since the days of his 1980’s Crosman Co2 bb rifle! (Which I still have ☺)
I bought seven tins of ammo to start, including the fearsome looking JSB Exact Jumbo Monster Diabolo .22 cal, 25.39 gr. pellets! So far have only tried the Crow Magnum. The Jumbo Monster ones look like they have massive stopping power!
All in all, this is an excellent rifle, and for a reasonable cost. I’m very happy with my purchase. As long as Gamo keeps a high standard of quality like this, I’ll be a customer for life. Looking to build a small airgun collection of 4 or 5 rifles, 4 or 5 pistols, and 1 big bore PCP. Thinking of getting the Umarex Hammer .50 cal PCP air rifle when it comes out this fall…but I wish Gamo made something like that, in .50 cal!
If you’re looking for a fun and accurate target air rifle, this is a great choice. If you’re looking to send a lot of pests to their maker, definitely a great choice! Hunting small game is definitely an option here, which also makes this a compelling piece of equipment to add to a survival kit or bug out supplies.

I was pleasantly surprised with this gun. I took a flyer on it as I knew nothing about it other than the reviews I read across several sites. Was on the fence over this or the .22 sized ones and went with this and have no complaints. It nails a standard size 10oz can at 50 yards with a nicely wider exit hole cleanly through the other side. It will take anything up to a rabbit at that distance. It would probably work much farther, but I have not tried at those distances, and cant say on the knock down/penetration power past 50 yards. Targets get small out that far too, but give it a try. Very powerful on squirrels within that 50-yard or less range. The gun shoots very fast so getting the sighting requires a paper target and some glasswork, but once you get it set its highly accurate, very little drop, and not too much adjustment up/down. Left/right was almost dead on out of the box. I sighted it from about 25 yards then verified at 40, and found it still works to 50. Pro tip: Use the rear focus feature to set it up so you can see the target WITHOUT your eyeglasses on, and then do NOT wear your corrective glasses when you shoot – that messes the refraction up. No corrective lenses and its focused and nails the target. Re-tighten the scope screws every now and then and its good to go. I only gave 4 stars on the noise level – its not Hollywood whisper quiet, but I’ve missed squirrels, and the sound doesn’t spook them so I could re-load and shoot again. its just not super quiet, but I may not have enough experience with other air-guns and clearly the game doesn’t care. The directions aren’t clear on loading – just break the action downward and put the pellet flush into the hole on the barrel half and close it up. Good luck!

I looked at a lot or air rifles before deciding to purchase the Gamo Wildcat Whisper. I based my decision on the reviews that other people submitted for the gun. The biggest complaint about the rifle was the quality of the scope. Granted it’s not a top of the line optic, but with some patience I was able to dial it in to hit a 1″ bullseye at 25 yards fairly consistently. It took about 50 pellets to get it zeroed in, but once I got it sighted it shot fine. I was using .22 cal. lead wadcutters to sight with. I had a .22 cal. 50’s vintage Crossman pellet rifle that wouldn’t build pressure anymore, and the pellets were left over from that gun. They were in my ammo box for 30+ years.
I think with a rifle of this type it takes a few shots, sometimes quite a few shots before the gun starts to setle down. I know when I clean my deer rifles it takes 2-3 rounds at the range the following season before they start to shoot true. A little lead in the barrel and the bullets start going where I want them to. The Wildcat Whisper isn’t a high powered rifle. It’s a single pump and ready to go. One thing I did do, which may have helped, was to check the tightness of the screws on the scope mount and scope rings every 10-12 shots. They did seem to loosen up a bit while I was sighting in, but eventually I got them to the point where they seemed to stay tight. The torx wrench provided with the scope didn’t fit the scope screws that well so I would invest in a better wrench. The rifle has some zing to it which may cause the screws to get loose. Also some people complained about the sound of the rifle when shot. It is pretty loud the first few shots, but gets quieter the more it’s shot. It doesn’t Whisper though. You hear each shot. If you want something really quiet get a straw and some tissue paper, and start shooting spit balls. All in all I think it’s a nice rifle. It has alot of power, and shoots pretty decent groups once you get the scope squared away.
