I have never found a waterproofing product that is as good as new. So maybe it is impossible. It improved waterproofing of my old ski jacket but even after 2 treatment, results are meh.

Wow! This stuff is great. I revived a 10 year old ski jacket and restored the DWR so well I thought I’d test it under the faucet. Water beaded right off. I turned the sleeve inside out and the fleece lining even shed the water and wasn’t even damp when I felt it. Easy to use, recommended as a soak but you can also do the treatment in the washing machine like I did. 1 bottle treated 4 hardshells, 2 soft shells, a fleece (was just curious if it could be done) and 4 pair of gloves and a pair of 20 year old Outdoor research Gore-tex gaiters. The recommended treatment is 1 oz per garment. I dumped the whole bottle in tin the washing machine filled with warm water, ran a gentle cycle to agitate for about 10 minutes, let soak for another 10 minutes then agitated a bit more. Skip the rinse as you want to leave the stuff on the garment. Used the spin cycle to get rid of the water, you could wring it out by hand. Tossed the stuff in the dryer and dried them with a low heat set. You could hang your garment up to dry but I have found better luck with a quick heat set. Plus the heat revives the old DWR finish too. It’s really that easy. Even the fleece beaded up water.
When to use this stuff….. If you have a garment that has a DWR (durable water repellant) coating and it is wetting out or not beading up when it should, you should first do a couple of things. Wash the garment with some tech wash and then dry with a low temp heat set. Sometimes just throwing the garment in the dryer will revive the DWR. However if it is still not beading up, it’s time to use some Revivex. McNett’s Revivex comes in a wash-in/soak or a spray. The soak is easy to use if you are doing multiple garments at the same time. The spray is easier to use as you just spray it on and leave to air dry on a hanger. It’s easier to add extra treatments in between seasons.
One thing I like about Mcnett’s Revivex ove other products like Nikwax is that this one product treats everything you need to waterproof. Nikwax tends to have a different product of every different kind of fabric and it gets confusing and expensive when you buy a bottle for this and a bottle for that. Nikwax works just as well but I find that McNett’s Revivex is a one stop shop that works great and is slightly cheaper too.
One tip when using this stuff, wear old clothing. You will waterproof that cotton shirt if you splash some Revivex on it but only in the spot you get it on the shirt. Even though it doesn’t seem to change the color of the garments as it dries clear, I would suggest a spot test if you are picky about your colors. The stuff that splashed on the my cotton shirt did leave some darker spots. I have heard that you can add some stain resistant and waterproofing to ordinary cotton jeans. Haven’t tried that just yet.

For a package that treats only 8 garments (based on 1 ounce per garment as recommended), this stuff is frustratingly expensive. Prices seem to range between $1.50 and $2 per once. That said, I keep buying it, and go through a couple bottles every year, as I have not found anything that works better.
1) This is a DWR coating, designed to repel water and prevent it from soaking into the garment for as long as possible. Eventually water will soak through, especially if the garment does not have waterproof seams. As a DWR coating, you should not expect miracles: your blue jeans, windbreaker, or Carhartt jacket can be made water resistant, but eventually will wet out and soak through. You should start with a garment that already has proper waterproof construction (seam tape where applicable, multiple layer/membrane fabrics, or tightly knit polyester or nylon “windbreaker” type fabrics). Technical gear comes pre-treated with this stuff, and can be restored to factory performance with each reapplication.
2) You’ll need to figure out a few tricks based on your type of washing machine. What I’ve found that works best is to run a load of synthetic garments with my typical Nathan’s Sport Wash detergent, then fill the washer again to the minimum level to mostly cover the clothes, while adding ReviveX. I then let the washer agitate the garments for 10 minutes, but do not ever let it get to the “rinse” cycle. I will reset the washer after 10 minutes and force it to do a spin cycle. From here, I run the dryer on medium heat until completely dry. Test for a successful application by spraying each garment with water, but when following the instructions here, I have yet to have any unsuccessful applications. The instructions say you can air dry the clothing, but I have found this to be far less effective than heating it in the dryer.
3) I find for garments that are used almost daily throughout the season, such as a favorite jacket, I may need two or three applications per year. For occasional use items like tents and ski pants, I can often go a year or two between applications.

I had 2 name brand rain jackets that were merely windbreakers at this point, repelling zero rain. I followed the directions, soaked in a bucket in the tub instead of the washer since I can’t turn off the rinse function and they came out of the dryer completely waterproofed with no residue on the dryer or jackets. Saved me from spending money on a new jacket and saved otherwise perfectly fine clothing from wasting away in the back of my closet or landfill.

I work outside in pacific north west that means it’s rainy a lot! This stuff will make your rain gear work like new or better than new. I fill wash machine with warm water add appropriate amount of product respective to water level and number of garments. Put product in and let the wash cycle do its thing but pay attention when it’s done and spins out you don’t want the washer to fill for rinse with garments in there. I find it works best if don’t try to do too much at once. I put my XL jacket and bibs in and that’s plenty. You want the garment to move around and agitate good. Put in dryer and let the product “set”
Water beads off and gear stays breathable witch if you spend a lot of time in rain gear and are active it needs to breathe other wise you’ll feel like you weren’t wearing rain gear at all cause youll be soaking wet with sweat! Add cold to that and you’re miserable all day! This product keeps me dry and warm inside my rain gear.
