This router is absolutely tiny and it does exactly as it’s advertised to do and does it well. If you’re looking for a router that comes with OpenWRT, this is a great option! I thought that the default firmware was something else because initially it does look different, but it really is OpenWRT! If you go into the “Advanced settings” tab, it’ll direct you to the OpenWRT UI. It just has an additional front facing UI but it’s very easy to get into the OpenWRT UI.

This is not only good for traveling, it’s also amazing for providing a small local network. We have been using it for over a month now. It’s so powerful, and the performance is solid. Overall, we are very happy with device and highly recommend it, especially for those who have a T-Mobile business cell phone plan, which usually offers an extra line for free. Since we have an extra line and extra cell phones, and T-Mobile offers 200GB premium HS data, this little device connects to our existing switch effortlessly. We were worried about the cell phone battery draining, but since we dedicate this cell phone line for our networking, the cell phone connects to this device all the time, so the phone battery has not been an issue at all. We are pleasantly surprised that this device delivers a steady T-Mobile 5G HS speed, and the WiFi signal reaches farther, which is much better than what we have with AT&T fiber internet. So we canceled our AT&T Fiber internet subscription. The only thing is the device is kind of hot while running, but we got this $13 super quiet fan from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G05A2MU?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details, which really cools it down 🙂

The main purpose for this small lightweight portable gear is to provide you with external portable sharable for many people VPN internet access. At it works very well. Tested with different WiFi spot in the city, almost everywhere works fine. Very fast performance of VPN. Web authentication works fine in most cases. Also it is very helpful ability to power this router from power bank. Real mobile
The application for Android very useful as well . Very good strong signal.
    Thank you.

I purchased an older version of this router for a friend a few years ago and put it into his stage box, was really impressed at how simple and reliable it was so when My brand name WiFi router died last week I decided to get one for myself.
I installed it in the rack Friday night and burned it in for 24 hours then used it live on stage Saturday night, the sound guy said it was lightning fast with no latency.
Pros, if you look at the attached photo of the bottom, when you look through the grill you can see a gigantic fan so we know it’s capable of keeping it’s self cool.
In effort to not block off the cooling grill I mounted it upside down with Velcro sitting on top of my switch.
Setup was super easy, the router comes with a two page start up instruction, it’s simple and directly to he point, read it and you won’t have any questions.
I would strongly recommend to anyone wanting a small travel WiFi router.

    The GL.iNet Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) is a portable Wi-Fi 6 travel router.

1.) Fast and reliable Wi-Fi: The Slate AX provides fast and reliable Wi-Fi speeds, for multiple devices that are connected.

2.) Compact and portable: The router is small and lightweight, making it easy to take with you on trips. This allows for multiple devices to use a single Wi-Fi access like those offered on cruises and hotels. I use it with my AppleTV set-top box in hotels with the VPN set to my home town.

3.) OpenWrt support: The router runs on OpenWrt, which is a popular open-source operating system that gives users a lot of flexibility and customization options.

4.) Easy to set up: The router is easy to set up, even for those who are not tech-savvy. I set mine up with my phone.

5.) Built-in VPN: The router has built-in support for 30 VPNs, which can be used to encrypt your internet traffic and protect your privacy.

    Wireless band count: Dual-band
    Gigabit Ethernet: Yes
    IPv6 compatible: Yes
    Encryption type: WPA3
    Color: Black

This router is very simple to setup yet, for those so inclined, has some very nice features like ad blocking, excellent VPN support, TOR support and the ability to add in a micro SD card for shared storage over SMB. The toggle switch on the side can be easily configured to turn VPN and TOR access on or off quickly. Also the firmware is built on OpenWRT meaning there’s hundreds of optional packages that can extend this router in ways most routers can’t be extended. Yes, it’s an excellent travel router but it also works very well as one’s main router at home. Highly recommend.

I’m very happy with the performance of this router. I had the Slate model for years. This is very similar but bigger and better. I was starting to have trouble with the Slate not being able to connect to every wifi network and decided to upgrade. I’m glad I did. The AX has no problem with the newest wifi6 networks when acting as a repeater. It also provides a much stronger and faster connection for clients. The software is very similar to the Slate. I use the built in WireGuard VPN software to connect to my home network. The Slate would top out at about 10 Mbps, but this one maxes out my home connections speed at about 25 Mbps. According to the specs, it should be capable of much faster, but I just haven’t had it connected to a fast enough source to test this yet. It does everything I need, and I’m very happy with it, but I do have a few criticisms. It is substantially bigger than the Slate. It still fits the bill of a travel router, but definitely takes a lot more room in the luggage. It also has substantially higher power requirements and I’m not thrilled with how it’s delivered. This unit takes 20 watts and delivers that with a 5 volt 4 amp adapter. The Slate could run off just about any USB adapter. Try to find an adapter that delivers 4 amps though, or a cable that can handle it. The adapter is big with a thick wire. So, on top of the AX being bigger than the Slate, the power adapter is huge compared to the Slate. I’d say the power adapter alone takes up as much room at the old Slate router. I feel like they should have increased the voltage rather than letting this thing draw 4 amps. That’s what the fast cell phone chargers do. They jump up to 9 volts to reduce the current requirement. That approach doesn’t require a heavy power brick and thick wire. I attached some images with the old Slate and new Slate AX side by side.
