I’ve file server that I use to keep my media on which needed storage, so I picked one of these up. The price was good and the Backblaze reports show these as having a VERY low failure rate. So far it does what a hard drive should, holds data.
Unfortunately, there are a couple of complaints. First this HGST is noisy. I can hear it spinning over the sounds of my other three hard drives. My other three are Western Digital Black, which is a different class of storage but it is a subjective difference. Second the spin-up time is noticeably longer. When I access files off of this drive the response time is noticeably longer. Not alarmingly so and the transfer speed is equivalent so its minor and not really an annoyance for me.
I would recommend this drive as long as you aren’t bothered by noise or waiting. For a computer that is sitting at a desk next to you in quiet office this is probably not the right drive. Stick it in an external enclosure for a backup drive or in a PC that isn’t fussed with quick response time.

Excellent Value! Purchased 4 HGST NAS drives to replace my 7 year old drives that have been in full time service. All four drives were opened and tested prior to install with CrystalDisk. All four drives tested perfectly.
They all show zero hours and one power up count.
I have been very happy with MdTechUSA. They are very responsive to questions and cover the 5 year warranty with the drives I purchased.

Installazione senza problemi.
Installato in versione RAID offre ottime performance.

Should have checked Seller reviews on this product. Item basically matches cost of new item but this item is not new. Drives arrived with Nov 2013 mfg dates. I immediately checked listing and no where does it state used drive, actually listed specs below which says 5 year warranty. Well I checked HGST website for warranty and it ends in Dec 2018. Only 1 year since it has to be a used drive, though I didn’t check since I purchased with 5 year warranty in mind. Doing a return and purchasing NEW RETAIL box to ensure I am getting something with actual 5 year warranty. Very sad that I need to reorder and wait for a very blatantly incorrect item. Be aware that I did not check drives since it didn’t pay to spend money on drives that aren’t covered under a warranty but for 1 year.

Update: just put in a 4th one of these. Upon running a SMART test (extended) after installation, it discovered a fault factor (got this one from ServerTech and it appears thus far that they are being responsive in replacement). I still keep the 5 stars on the drive, for this can happen to any drive, but advise that you always run an “extended SMART test” on any new drive, before acceptance and usage.
I have three of these (from Prince Tech via Amazon) in a Synology 1813+. They were easy to install and each appear to this point to be rock solid performers in every regard, thus a good value for those who appreciate what you are getting. For ultra-reliability and long life offering always-on, enterprise-quality storage performance, and low cost of operation, I would buy these again.

Purchased 6 new drives from ServerTech Inc in 2013 and in 2016 after 27000 hours, one failed. Found out the 5 year warranty was not through HGST/Hitachi (not clear in the original web ad), but was from Server Tech. On replacement, the same company appears to be called Serverpartdeals now. The replacement failed the extended smart test after a week – so they replaced it again – with advanced replacement. (I email tracking number of RMA and they overnighted new drive to me). These drives have performed well in my 12bay Synology – quiet and error free (except for the one crash). Serverpartdeals indicated my replacement would have the balance of the original drives 5 year warranty. I have purchased two additional drives from Serverpartdeals in 2016, all new to have a couple of spares. In my case these low priced enterprise drives worked well, which speaks well for the vendor(s). I have no knowledge or experience with the currently listed vendor for these drives.
I have used Hitachi now HGST drives for years and believe their enterprise class drives are quieter and more reliable than enterprise class drives from WD and Seagate, in that, I have had more failures and bad blocks with WD and Seagate drives than HGST in the same air conditioned, battery backup/surge protected environment. I normally rotate drives out of continuous service as they approach 5-6 years of 24×7 use — to intermittent duty as duplicate workstation backup drives and/or duplicate image storage drives.
