Amazing book to challenge yourself!

Rick Broadwell has done brass players a great service by writing us a new set of original jazz duets! Jazz/commercial trombonist Brien Matson edited the trombone version and made sure that everything works on the slide (note that many, but not all of the duets work between the trumpet and trombone versions of the books, as some keys were changed to better adapt to the trombone).
The book is a triple-threat: it works great as new material duets in a jazz idiom for the advancing student or professional, but as the chord changes are included, a rhythm section could easily be added for a full jazz combo performance. Not only that, but each of the 22 duets is composed to the changes of a jazz standard, so both parts act as a “lick library” to increase the player’s vocabulary in future improvisations.
If I haven’t missed anything, the range goes between F just below the bass clef to the C above middle C, so both parts are challenging, but accessible on tenor and bass trombones, as well as euphonium (or bassoon!). I would do some octave shifts to perform these on tuba, but they’re a fun high register challenge on the F tuba!

This duet book is great and for many reasons. First of all the notation is very clear and easy to follow. The trombone is a difficult instrument to write for and Rick has done an outstanding job. It’s fun to record one part and then play along with the second part. Rick knows what it takes to hone a brass players skills.
I recommend this book for trombone players at any level.
