I’ve been trying to hone in on a Les Claypool tone, where it’s really bright, but it doesn’t ruin the punchiness in the low end. I would consider these Dunlop strings to be one of the most important factors to match a Claypool tone. Chords sound less muddied, bright tone, and the low end is punchy enough to headbang to.

I was originally running 5 string bass strings on my bass to tune low but found them to be too cumbersome acting like wet linguini above 160bpm. I switched to these bad boys and theyre perfect the neck tension is just right and theyre not hard to play. I’m tuned in B,F#,B,E these bad boys just hit the spot and keep tune well too especially with all the big bends i like to do! Solid. I will buy these for all my bass’s from standard tuning to drop B!

These strings are great for a nice smooth, deep tone. Very well suited to a light touch on low action. I wanted a flatwound set that I could tune to BEAD, and this is it (now stuck with unused G, but still happy). Medium scale suits my Ibanez Artcore bass.

This is my first set of light gauge strings and I love them. I put them on my Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass and they sound good no matter the settings of the bass. The feel is almost soft or rubbery compared to heavier gauges and I prefer that, it makes slapping ridiculously easy (for me, the way I play), as in I barely have to hit the string in order for it to respond the way I want it to. I don’t feel like I have lost any low end or anything – that is what all those knobs on the instrument are for :). Going forward, I will buy these again – I love the feel of them and they’re reasonably priced.

Sadowsky 5 string – Aguilar rig
These strings combine the best of all worlds – bright, lots of growl, excellent feel, and fat warmth.
Love DR HI Beams, but they lack warmth when needed – Sadowsky stainless blues have fantastic tone, great growl, excellent fundamental tone, but the feel is very tight, not as comfy as the DR’s. Sadowsky nickle blues – nice growl, great sound, much warmer, also a little quieter – the tapered B string is the best sounding of all B strings. The E String seems a little quiet in contrast to the B (we’re splitting hairs here). Even still, the Sadowsky Nickels also have that tight (inflexible) feel.
The Dunlops have a more flexible feel, and seem to hold up under varied tonal demands (Motown to Slap), I’m able to dial tones that stay consistent through the spectrum. It’s amazing what Dunlop has been able to accomplish in 12 years of string manufacturing. YMMV depending on your style, bass, and rig – but for me the testing is over, and sticking with Dunlop Super Bright nickels.

Bright and tight, not rough on your fingers

First, let me start off by admitting I am not a bassist. I am a guitar player. I have a P Bass clone to write bass lines for music I record at home. I play with my fingers, thank you very much. No picks for me, even though I am a guitarist. So keep all this in mind as you read below.
I like these strings very much. The tone is very even and notes are clear. Even the notes from low E up to G on the 4th string are distinct, which is not common on budget basses in my experience. The stock strings that were on this bass did not have this clarity. Also, the overall tone is nice. You can make it bright sounding, or you can make it mellow by plucking the strings with different parts of your fingers. Something else I noticed is the volume is pretty even from 4th strings up to 1st string, with the D and G strings being slightly louder depending on how you pluck. With this in mind, I can even the volume out with my plucking hand attack. The stock D’Adarrio strings didn’t do this. Another nice feature is the stings feel good to the touch. Not as rough as the other brand. It’s not as smooth as a flatwound, but still smoother feeling than some other brands of roundwounds. Also, The tension of the strings feel more consistent from string to string. On many basses, I’ve found that the low strings are really tight feeling and the upper stings feel loose. It is nice to have a set of strings where all strings feel the same aside from size.
I don’t know if fulltime bassists would agree with what I’ve said here. They know this instrument far better than a guy that has spent 20-some years playing the guitar. But I would tell them to give these a try if they are using a similar type of string. I have tried many brands of guitar strings and switched to dunlops on guitar. What I found great about the guitar strings also exists in these bass strings. I can’t say anything about longevity, but so far I am very pleased with these strings. These strings make playing bass enjoyable for a guitarist. Imagine what they could do for someone that knew what they were doing.
