Kaytee Backyard Wildlife Food Blend, 5 Pound

We’ve been feeding a little family of squirrels who lost their mama for about a year now (from the time they were quite tiny). They eat anything and everything – but particularly love Kaytee Fruit & Nut Bird Food & shelled peanuts – they never leave a drop in the bowl, and it’s gone quickly. I noticed Kaytee had this version particularly for squirrels/chipmunks and thought I’d try it this time. Ugh.. mistake! It just sits in the bowl. 🙁 They particularly don’t like the little oblong white/light colored seeds (looks like wheat or barley?)… they don’t touch those AT ALL. Going back to the fruit & nut blend. *Just a side note – it’s best that they aren’t dependent on us at all anymore, we know, and we’re working on that. We have cut the food down dramatically – and only a few of the squirrels out of the original 5-6 remain… they’ve mostly moved on. But it’s clear they prefer the Fruit & Nut mix.

Bought this to go into a jar/house feeder for the squirrels because the pigeons keep pilfering the nut houses we have set up. Unfortunately those spoiled squirrels want nothing but their nuts. The chipmunk seemed to pick at some of it, though. The winner in all this are the couple rabbits we have visiting our yard. They liked it so much that they’ve been ignoring the carrots and apples some nights so it must be good, and even went as far to try pilfering some from the squirrel feeder. Fat little rabbits couldn’t fit inside though. Whatever is left around the yard the pigeons and other birds seem to pick up so win, win for most of the wildlife.

Overall it’s a nice blend worth giving a shot. If your squirrels are spoiled perhaps look for something else. For rabbits and chipmunks I approve this food.

My garden was invaded by chipmunks. I purchased two live traps but didn’t know what to bait them with. I took a chance on the wild animal feed and within a week, captured 14 chipmunks and 4 birds. I relocated the chipmunks and released the birds right away. Good stuff.
