Customer Reviewer –
M.2 NVMe storage has come on massively in terms of how fast they are now and also how cheap they are compared to just a generation ago.
The Kingston KC2500 comes in a 2280 M.2 form factor (the longest of the 3 current form factors) fits easily into many modern laptops as it is thinner than the older 2.5″ format. If anyone is looking to upgrade a laptop, it is important to make sure that it can use M.2 2280 drives.
Speed-wise, I am very impressed with the speed. It makes a noticeable difference to the first generation M.2 drive I had in my HP laptop. I have also tried it in an external caddy where I got speeds comparable to the older USB-C specification of the laptop, but very quick none the less.
I did get a problem initially with the drive not being recognised correctly by the system (it could be seen but nothing could be done with it) but reseating the drive solved this. I have seen this in the past with M.2 drives so it look like it could be one of those issues that can crop up with these type of drives, rather than being specific to this particular one.
A nice addition from Kingston is that they supply a licence code for Acronis True Image (a couple of generations old) to make imaging the old drive onto the new one quick and easy.
Overall, a worthwhile upgrade for first-generation M.2 systems and good for speedy external drives with the right caddy.
