Had my wife buy a pair of these for our kid to bang on. Sadly, even after trying to tune them we were unable to get any kind of decent sound out of them whatsoever.
I instead snagged an empty plastic jar that held a bunch of mixed nuts. It is about the same size with a small dimple in the bottom. Turned it upside down and the with no effort at all it sounds way better than these bongo drums. Not great, of course, but there is at least a bit of resonance to enjoy.

The Lukmaa hand drums or “bongos” are blast to play!
I have always wanted a set of hand drums to play around with when camping or for impromptu jam sessions with friends. You never know when you’re going to stumble upon a drum circle, so I wanted to be ready!
Let’s be honest, among musical instruments the bongos are somewhat of a novelty. They are a great entry level instrument for kids and beginning percussionists. So, with that in mind I kept my expectations low. Upon receipt, I was pleasantly surprised! These little bongos are actually pretty nice.
Out of the box, I noticed one of the bolts holding the drums to the center block was loose. A few turns of the wingscrew and I was all set. A wrench for tuning the drums is included. I thought this was a nice touch, even though I didn’t need it. Surprisingly, the drums arrived in tune and ready to play!
I’ve been having a blast playing these and so has my 7 yo daughter. They are great for rhythm building and musical exploration.
The Lukmaa bongos aren’t going to win any design awards, but they are well constructed and appear to be good quality. Overall, they’re fun to play and the sound is on par with hand drums at this price point.

For me, bongos should be playable with your hands. The sound on the larger one is what I would expect, but the smaller one may just be too small, at least for an adult. They both sound good with a mallet or drum stick. I did try tightening it, which helped, but I didn’t want to pull too hard and break it.
