I am a professional structural concrete contractor and purchased this unit to add some convenience to our process. If we need to make a lot of cuts, we break out corded rebar cutters, a long cord, and a generator. We wanted something that we could make a few cuts with and not have to worry about the noise and hassle of a generator. This unit fit the bill nicely and was very convenient in those situations. it is nimble enough to drop down into a wall form and cut verts if needed with no cord, super handy. another plus for this unit is that it takes the same batteries as most of the rest of our tools. its cycle speed on #4 and #5 rebar is maybe 50% longer than our corded units but totally worth that sacrifice in non-mass-production settings.
Unfortunately, this thing has failed after less than roughly 200 cuts. I have sent an inquirey to makita and have not heard a response yet but there website makes it look like i’ll be shipping this somewhere on my own dime IF they decide they owe me a repair.
I will update this review if i get a repair/replacement and it lasts long enough to be worth the price. these are expensive, but would have been worth it for me for what i needed, had it kept running.

Am a professional structural concrete contractor. This machine works well when its working. Yes its heavy Yes its convenient for making a few cuts in place of the chop saw. However this machine is traveling back and forth to the Makita repair center more than it is on the job. We are only trimming 4 and 5 bar and the machine broke again. It is now in transit for the 4th and last time – when it comes back there is gonna be a fire sale. Am very surprised about the cutter as the Makita rebar tying machine works very well, we have 2.

I bought this for work to cut chain. I watched the videos on it from Makita but couldn’t find a single customer review so I was hesitant. The Makita 18V lineup is what I primarily use and that is what finalized my decision on this one vs other electric over hydraulic rebar cutters. This is an excellent tool. It’s extremely heavy duty and also pretty heavy at about 20-25 lbs. The carrying handle balances it very nicely though when you’re carrying it. The ram opens quite wide and retracts automatically very quickly. Running the ram out is a bit slow but the power you get in exchange for speed more than makes up. I also use this to cut Pewag 3/8″ security chain and it does so with ease (if you don’t what this is look up videos of people trying to cut it). Overall this is worth the cost and I know it will last coming from Makita.
