Miracle-Gro Water Storing Crystals, Prevents Overwatering

It help me when we had the drought here in south Tx last year and it works. It keeps my plants hydrates and I was able to handle the watering restrictions. I mix it very well with top soil and works perfectly. It doesn’t burn or damaged my plants.

I purchased these water storing crystals to go into neck cozies for keeping cool in the summer. Basically, I took a 18″x9″ scrap of fabric, sewed the ends leaving a pouch and then put these crystals inside and sewed it up. If you do this, bear in mind that 1/4 teaspoon expands about 7x’s its size when wet, so don’t overfill your pouch!

After I filled my neck cozy (with about 1 1/4 tablespoons worth), I soaked them in ice water for about an hour. The crystals become balls of non-toxic gel. Virtually no water drips from this neck cooler and as the water evaporates from the water storing crystals, it just shrinks down in size and is ready to repeat the process. Not sure how many times this will work, but since this is the same product used in hot and cold compresses sold in stores that are reusable, I’d assume ‘many times’.

Another craft idea is to soak these in a combo of scented oil and water. You’ll be left with scented beads, which as the water evaporates, give off whatever scent you added to the water. A DIY air freshener.

Then there’s the intended purpose, to retain water in the soil of your plants. It works great for that as well. I mixed in a teaspoon to a quart of soil for houseplants. Depending upon the climate where you live, you may end up watering once a month instead of once a week. It’s great to leave on vacation and know you’ll still have ‘live’ plants when you return.

The package says keep out of reach of children and pets, however no mention of the product being toxic to them has been found in any literature I’ve read about this or similar products. Obviously the crystals do expand with moisture, so if ingested by anyone (human or animal) they would expand and could cause blockages in the digestive system which would be very harmful if not fatal.

A little bit goes a long way. This stuff is kinda fun to use. You can see in the pics and the video how it works. Holds moisture well for your plants. Have been using for a few months and it hasn’t changed the color of my soil or the depth, you can’t see it if you do it right(not putting it on the top of the soil but a couple inches in the dirt) haven’t seen any mold. Have mushrooms in 1 pot but I literally have this in 50 pots and in my garden bed so no fault of this product 😆 😅 have purchased several times and will definitely purchase again when my supply runs low. I buy 2 at a time. Great bang for your buck and helps save on watering. With 90-100° days I can water every other day so a time saver too🧚‍♀️💃🧚

Using these to control humidity in a cigar humidor and they work well at holding it at 79 percent.
I am using a small dish around 4″ in diameter across the top and after pouring enough crystals to cover the bottom of the dish, which is around 2 1/4″ across the bottom, when water added the crystals expanded to fill the entire container.
They have been sitting in the humidor for around two months now and haven’t changed much at all while holding the humidity levels stable.
This amount will last me the rest of my life, I can even use these sewn into hankerchiefs and then when hydrated with water you can then drape it around your neck and as they evaporate it cools you without soaking your clothing.
