I love this camera! It takes wonderful pictures and is extremely well made! I recommend this camera to every one and anyone who is looking for a professional level camera. But I have to say I received my camera with no battery and no memory card! Which was such a bummer sence the page implied that it was included in the purchase. I was not able to use my camera for two whole weeks after I received it, due to the fact that I had to order a battery and memory chip. This was very saddening for me sence I had planed on using the camera right away and none of the local stores sold the right type!

Great DSLR! Amazon did it again! I was originally skeptical about getting a camera that was used – Acceptable from amazon warehouse… but they proved that itโ€™s perfectly fine. Item came in much better shape than I imagined. Thereโ€™s next to no scratches on it and works like a charm.

The camera stopped working. Nikon no longer repairs the D5100. Best Buy will repair a D5100 that wasn’t purchased from them. Any Ideas?

I have only just purchased this camera recently, but have taken a few hundred images and I could not believe the quality of the images with a camera at this price. Plus till the end of May 2013 you can claim the Nikon ยฃ40 cash back!

It is a good time to purchase this model as the newer D5200 has come out, but this is an excellent camera, Yes, the D5200 has 24MB compared to 16MB, but unless you are printing images at the size of a very large poster you will not notice the difference. The main enhancements in the D5200 is in Video, but the D5100 has excellent HD video anyway.

I found that this is a very easy camera to use and set-up, also light and comfortable to hold and well balanced. It has the advantage of a swivel live view monitor, ideal if you need to hold the camera high to get that shot, if you are unable to use the view finder.

I have just ordered the Nikon 55-300mm VR lense, which is also a good buy via Amazon. So I would highly recommend the purchase.

Okay, here’s for some in depth then.
I bought this camera as I fancied something really good and functional to take pictures with. When I first got it, I started off just wanting a picture here and there and didn’t think I would need anything beyond the 18-55mm lens, however I have since fallen in love with photography and now have a 35mm f1.8G, as well as a 55-200mm to take over from the 18-55mm for extra reach. I also have a 75-300mm bought used for ยฃ100, but I don’t really use it much and it doesn’t autofocus on my camera, which is actually where my gripe starts.
I admit that I should have known this before I bought the camera, however I do feel its a bit of a shame that the camera doesn’t autofocus with older lenses, especially since the D7000 for just ยฃ100 or so more (without a lens though!) can do this, as well as being weather sealed.
I can get by without these features, however I would recommend to anyone who wants to seriously get in to photography to get the D7000 as its futureproofed basically, and is an AMAZING camera at an affordable price. The D5100 however, is absolutely PERFECT providing you don’t want to use older lenses or lenses without an inbuilt focus motor.
I have taken some absolutely gorgeous photos on this, however I believe its the lens that gets a great picture and seldom the camera, but all that aside this is a beautiful camera to take photos with and is very well laid out and requires little menu diving.
It looks very sleek and professional and handles like a dream, the twisty turny screen is also a beautiful feature and the reason I decided to buy THIS camera as it happens, however I rarely use live view mode and I feel most people will not suffer by not having it.
The auto features work perfectly 99.999999% of the time, and it’s really easy to use manually if you want to.
I will upload some of my pictures to the images section, however I will only use the ones in which I used the standard 18-55mm lens, as for the others you can find some on the actual lenses themselves I mentioned earlier.
All in all then, this camera is perfect for a keen amateur, however if you see yourself upgrading in the future I would recommend you buy the D7000 instead, as it does everything you would want at a cheaper price anyway, only if you see yourself buying a ยฃ2000+ camera would you want to upgrade from there and even then I don’t really feel its necessary, unless of course you want to go on full frame.

The D5100 was as advertised….great shape. The 18-55 has problems. It hunts constantly and makes noise. I tried it on multiple bodies…defective lens. Grrrrrr.

This is the first DSLR I have bought, having previously used various compact cameras. The settings menu and controls were a bit daunting at first, and I decided to buy a book on the camera. The photos taken on auto mode were excellent, but moving on to manual settings, proved to be a disaster at the first attempts. A bit of book reading began to give me a better understanding of how to use the camera, and i am now able to get excellent photos on manual settings. The camera is extremely versatile, and i am learning all the time. It does take time to understand all of the possibilities with this camera, but patience is rewarded. I am very pleased so far, and am looking forward to using the camera more and more. Well done Nikon, this is a remarkable camera and well worth the money.

For somebody like me who has not used a DSLR camera that much and is still learning about the different settings, I would say this is a perfect beginners camera. I used to use Cannon but after reading a lot of reviews I opted for the Nikon instead this time. I’m very impressed with the picture quality (even if the pics are only of my cat so far!). The vibrancy and detail is excellent. I’m looking forward to going out and about to use the camera a bit more.

Overall for an older Nikon (2011) I’m really pleased with this, it’s not too heavy and comes with everything you need to get started (minus the SD memory card so make sure you get one of those). I didn’t want to spend too much money while I’m still learning to use the camera and I think this is great value for money.

I own a D7100 and D700 in addition to the D5100 and can say that if you couple this camera with a good lens, such as a Nikkor 50mm F1.8G or 17-55mm 2.8, you can take photos of truly outstanding quality. Don’t chase the pixel count of a D7100 (a great camera, by the way) or higher, 16.2mp is more than you’ll ever need. I have no compunction taking this brilliant light-weight camera on photo-shoots. I’ve done re-enactment societies, weddings, pop-bands, model shoots and a host more with this superb camera and obtained amazing images. It’s a bargain and all the camera a pro-sumer will ever need.
